Methods and apparatus for extracting structured data from weblogs are disclosed. In some examples, the methods and apparatus include a web crawler to access a home page of a weblog, and identify a feed associated with the weblog. The methods and apparatus also include a feed finder to determine whether items in the feed contain sufficient content for feed-guided segmentation. The methods and apparatus also include a feed classifier to determine whether the items in the feed contain full content of the weblog. The methods and apparatus also include a wrapper to map data found in the feed into a representation of a weblog post, and screen scrape the weblog into the representation of the weblog post.

Extracting structured data from weblogs

Methods and apparatus for extracting structured data from weblogs are disclosed. In some examples, the methods and apparatus include retrieving a feed referenced on a webpage of the weblog and, in response to determining that the feed does not contain a first portion of a weblog post, creating, via a processor, a representation of the weblog post based on a second portion of the weblog post included in the feed, searching, via the processor, the weblog for the second portion of the weblog post, when the second portion of the weblog post is found in the weblog, identifying, via the processor, a node associated with the second portion in the webpage, and modifying, via the processor, the representation based on information from within the node to reconstruct the weblog post.

A method of extracting individual posts from a weblog comprises the steps of: (a) providing a feed associated with the weblog; and (b) screen scraping the weblog into a representation for weblog posts using the feed data containing partial content of the weblog.

Allowing users to share an online search experience is disclosed. The method includes hosting an interactive virtual session. The interactive virtual session enables a primary user to control the interactive virtual session. The interactive virtual session is displayed at least in part on a computer associated with the first user. The method further includes providing access to the interactive virtual session to at least one secondary user. The secondary user has limited functionalities for interacting with the virtual session. A search query is received from a computer associated with the primary user. At least one search result is determined based on the received search query. The search results are sent to the computer associated with the user for display as part of the interactive virtual session. The search results include at least one representation of an item of interest in the one or more items of interest.

Providing a shared online search experience

A programmable document includes a physical document having at least one sheet of material and information recorded thereon and a computer attached to the physical document. The computer includes an input/output device, a processor and a memory storing the recorded information in digital form and metadata pertaining to the physical document. By attaching small, inexpensive, computing devices to paper documents, various electronic information associated with the physical document can be retained, updated and modified.

Programmable physical document

A system for providing item recommendations includes a memory, a device, responsive to a user request, for recording an item on a hardcopy medium, and a processor, for storing ratings of items and for generating recommendations for new items based on recommendation criteria. In response to the user request, the processor stores an implicit rating for the requested item in the memory, determines whether, based on the implicit rating and the recommendation criteria, to generate an item recommendation, and if the criteria for generating a recommendation is met, generates a recommendation of a new item. The recommender system may further store a representation of the recorded item in the memory. Recommendations may be based on item to item similarities, item to user similarities or user to user similarities.

Recommender system and method

The system comprises an improved document monitoring agent in which user evaluations are used to decide whether a changed document should be saved in the system or not. The evaluation of importance of the change in a document is performed by one or more users who collaboratively monitor a networked document, typically identified by a URL. By providing a user evaluation interface, it is possible for users to indicate their evaluation of the significance of the change. As such, only significantly changed documents, as indicated by the users themselves, are saved. Thus, a more efficient saving is obtained while at the same time reducing the risk of discarding potentially interesting changed documents which would have been discarded by conventional monitoring agents.
