The disclosure encompassed herein relates, in part, to a method for increasing energy density of plant biomass that can be used for production of renewable fuel, such as biodiesel oil and/or ethanol. In an aspect, genetic engineering for enhanced sugar accumulation can be achieved by overexpressing a bacterial enzyme sucrose isomerase. Sugars or oils extracted from the plants of the disclosure encompassed herein may be used for industrial purposes such as heating, producing bio-fuels such as biodiesel fuel, or lubricating applications.

Engineered plant biomass for biodiesel and bioethanol production

Provided herein are several improved lettuce varieties, having increased anthocyanin and polyphenol content, and increased oxygen radical absorption capacity, as compared to other known varieties of lettuce. Also provided are parts of such new lettuces, such as leaves, heads, seeds, tissue cultures, and extracts generated from such varieties. The disclosure also provides methods of using the new lettuces and parts thereof, for example to reduce blood glucose levels.

Methods of in vitro propagation of plants of the genusare described, including, in particular embodiments, plants of the speciesand. Methods of producing transgenic plants of the genusare also described, along with methods of producing recombinant proteins in such plants. Compositions and methods for administering recombinant proteins produced in these plants are also described.
