Polymers are disclosed that incorporate portions of secondary or tertiary polyamide segments connected with polyisocyanates. These polymers have enhanced matting properties. The enhanced matting properties are from creating an inherently matt surface from the polymer without the use of any separate fine particle size matting additives. Conventional matting agents such as fine particle size silica usually results in loss of physical properties such as haze development and porosity in the coating from the matting agent. Composites and hybrids of these polymers and other polyamides, polyurethane with vinyl polymers (acrylates) are also disclosed and claimed.

Matted polyamide-pud

Copolymer dispersions containing polyamide segments in aqueous media form binders for coatings for various industrial and construction materials. The copolymers have a high percentage of amide linkages. The copolymers are linked into higher molecular weight species by reactions with polyisocyanates (which forms urea linkages if the other reactant is an amine or a urethane linkage if the other reactant is a hydroxyl group).

Aqueous copolymer coating compositions for industrial and construction applications

An improved process for forming polyamide dispersions in water utilizing carbon dioxide to facilitate dispersion of the polyamide is disclosed. The polyamides are generally below 30,000 or 40,000 g/mole molecular weight when dispersed, but can be chain extended with polyfunctional species such as polyisocyanates after dispersion. The dispersions are useful in coatings, adhesives, and inks. Composites and hybrids of these other polyamides with vinyl polymers are also disclosed and claimed.

Waterborne polyamide and their chain extension with isocyanates to form cationic waterborne polyureas dispersions

Water dispersible polyamides having carboxylic acid groups are disclosed. These are made by reacting polycarboxyl is acids or anhydrides thereof with amine containing monomer or an amide terminated polyamide under reaction conditions such that a few of the carboxylic acid groups are residual and can promote dispersion in water. These polyamides after dispersion can be chain extended to higher molecular weight polymers or can be terminally functionalized with reactive groups such as isocyanate, epoxy, vinyl, acetoacetonate, or silanol groups. Composites and hybrids of these polyamides with vinyl polymers are also disclosed and claimed.

Water dispersible polyamide building blocks

Polymers are disclosed that incorporate large portions of elastomeric polyamide oligomers connected with polyisocyanates. These polymers have enhanced properties over similar polyurethanes due to better hydrolysis resistance of polyamides over polyesters and better UV resistance of polyamides over polyethers. Polyurea linkages can also improve properties over polyurethane linkages. Composites and hybrids of these polymers and other polyamides with vinyl polymers are also disclosed and claimed.

Water-borne polyamide-urea dispersions

This invention relates to polymers made from low molecular weight polyamide oligomers and telechelic polyamides (including copolymers) containing N-alkylated amide groups in the backbone structure. The described telechelic polyamides are used as the soft segment in the described TPU. These telechelic polyamides are unique in that they have an unexpectedly low glass-transition (desirably 30 degrees C. or lower) which makes them suitable for further reaction and polymerization, allowing for the formation of the described TPU. The resulting TPU can provide improved hydrolytic, oxidative and/or thermal stability as well as improved adhesion to other materials, especially polar materials.

Polymers made from telechelic N-alkylated polyamides

Low glass transition temperature polyamide oligomers or telechelic polyamides are formed from monomers forming tertiary amide linkages. These polyamides can be used with co-reactants to form high molecular weight or crosslinked polymers with desirable polyamide properties.

Telechelic N-alkylated polyamide polymers and copolymers

A polymerization process to copolymerize hydrophobic ethylenically unsaturated C-Colefins with polar monomers such as acrylates utilizing a polymeric support resin to stabilize the polymerization product in an aqueous media is described. The copolymer shows excellent adhesion to a variety of polymeric and/or polar substrates such as polyolefins, acrylate coatings, wood, etc.

Composite polymer emulsion

A product and processes comprising urethane polymer and at least one copolymer from a hydrophobic ethylenically unsaturated C-Colefins copolymerized with polar monomers such as acrylates. One process optionally utilizes an acid source to modify/catalyze the reactivity of the polar monomer and/or radically activated repeat unit from the polar monomer to promote incorporation of the ethylenically unsaturated olefin. Other processes vary depending on which polymer if formed and/or dispersed first. The hybrid copolymer shows excellent adhesion to a variety of polymeric and/or polar substrates such as polyolefins, acrylate coatings, wood, etc.

Dispersion of hybrid polyurethane with olefin-acrylic copolymerization

A polymerization process to copolymerize hydrophobic ethylenically unsaturated C-C. J olefins with polar monomers such as acrylates is described. The process utilizes an acid source to modify/catalyze the reactivity of the polar monomer and/or radically activated repeat unit from the polar monomer to promote incorporation of the ethylenically unsaturated olefin. The copolymer shows excellent adhesion to a variety of polymeric and/or polar substrates such as polyolefins, acrylate coatings, wood, etc.

Olefin acrylate emulsion copolymerization

A controlled free-radical polymerization process for forming end-functionalized polymers is disclosed, particularly by degenerative iodine transfer. The end-functionalized polymers are characterized by a polydispersity less than 2.5 and a predetermined molecular weight. The end-functionalized polymers are useful as reactive intermediates in condensation polymerization, chain polymerization and heterogeneous polymerization reactions.

A one-part, substantially formaldehyde-free, self-curing interpolymer comprising repeating units derived from a) about 4 to about 30 percent by weight of at least one functional monomer selected from olefinically unsaturated monomer containing a nucleophile group; b) about 4 to about 40 percent by weight of an olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid; c) about 1 to about 60 percent by weight of (meth)acrylonitrile; d) about 0 to about 80 percent by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of (meth)acrylic acid ester of an alcohol containing 1 to 30 carbon atoms; and e) about 0 to about 80 percent by weight of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of styrene, vinyl acetate, and vinyl halides, wherein at least one of monomers d) and e) are present in an amount of from about 0.1 percent by weight, for use as a fiber binder, such as for coating non-woven glass mats, or as a saturant for fiber substrates such as paper.
