An image forming apparatus includes an image forming portion, a housing, and a cover member. The image forming portion is configured to form an image. The housing supports the image forming portion and has conductivity. The cover member includes a handle having conductivity and is opened when maintenance of the image forming portion is carried out. In the image forming apparatus, when the cover member is in a closed state, the handle is separated from the housing by a distance larger than a predetermined particular distance, and during a process of the cover member being opened and transitioning from the closed state to an open state, the handle contacts or comes close to the housing so as to be separated from it by a distance equal to or smaller than the particular distance.

Communication control portion communicates with storage device based on interface communication standard, to perform data transfer therewith. Provided is a storage apparatus that detects abnormalities of a hard disk caused by the instantaneous power failure of a low voltage power supply. An effective value reduction detecting circuit transmits a detection signal, when the voltage of a low voltage power supply is lower than specific voltage. CPU memorizes time tto a flash memory. Also, CPU memorizes time t, when recovering low voltage power supplyon proper voltage. Then, CPU computes period of time T, which is time between time tand t. If the computed period of time T is within a range from first period of time Tto the second period of time T, CPU operates a voltage switch and re-supply the power supply to the hard disk. If not within the range, CPU does not re-supply power to the hard disk.

A signal generation portion of an image forming apparatus generates a different level of signal according to an output value of a pyroelectric sensor. A recognition portion determines a measurement value on the speed of change of the signal and recognizes which of a first range and a second range the measurement value is. In a power supply portion, when the measurement value falls within the first range in a mode other than a power-saving mode, and the image forming apparatus is brought into the power-saving mode, and, when the measurement value falls within the second range in the power-saving mode, the power-saving mode is cancelled.

In an automatic density adjusting device in a copying machine, the width of variation in exposure intensity in relation to the change in a density correction value or magnification manually set is set to a large width if a document is dark, while being set to a small width if the document is light. An image forming apparatus equipped with a binding function includes an image forming unit for forming an image onto a sheet, a binding unit provided adjacent to the image forming unit, and a malfunction detector for detecting malfunction in the operation of the binding unit. A detected malfunction is indicated by at least one of these displays. An optical system driving device has a motor which rotates constantly in one direction for providing rotary driving power. A regular rotation electromagnetic clutch is connected to the rotating motor for transmitting driving power to the optical system for reciprocal movement of the optical system in one direction. A reverse electromagnetic clutch connected to the rotor motor transmits driving power to the optical system for reciprocal movement thereof in the opposite direction. A control circuit is provided which receives a pulse signal for controlling either the regular rotation or the reverse electromagnetic clutch at the start of the regular rotation electromagnetic clutch to gradually increase the effective driving power provided to the optical system to move the optical system at the start of movement.
