There is provided a quartz glass article having a surface treated with novel coating materials which provides a reduced chemistry, wherein the quartz glass surface having a reduced chemistry upon exposure to melted silicon or similarly corrosive environments, forms crystalline structures covering at least 30% of the coated surface of the quartz glass crucible. Said crystalline covered surface provides a more stable surface of contact with the silicon melt and the growth of single crystal silicon. In one embodiment of the invention, the coating material comprises at least a methyl group for providing at least one of a hydrogenated and a methylated surface on the coated surface, forming rosette structures, or other crystalline morphologies covering at last 80% of the coated surface. In another embodiment of the invention, the coating material is selected from at least one of an amine, an organosilane halogen and mixtures thereof.

Quartz glass crucible and method for treating surface of quartz glass crucible

A copolymer having segments of polyphenylene ether, styrene and/or acrylonitrile, a method for making the copolymer, and a blend of the copolymer with a styrenic resin are provided. The polyphenylene ether segments are derived from polyphenylene ether polymers having at least one end cap that a pair of unsaturated aliphatic carbon atoms, i.e. a carbon&mdash;carbon double bond. The copolymer is miscible with styrene/acrylonitrile copolymers.

Copolymers of functionalized polyphenylene ether resins and blends thereof

A method for making 2,6-xylenol is described. One embodiment of the method comprises: preparing a magnesium-based solid catalyst composition by dry-blending basic magnesium carbonate with at least one filler; forming the catalyst composition into a suitable catalyst-shape; calcining the shaped catalyst at a temperature in the range of about 350&deg; C. to about 550&deg; C.; and reacting phenol and methanol in the presence of the catalyst, to form 2,6-xylenol. The level of chlorides in the magnesium carbonate is less than about 250 ppm, and the level of calcium in the magnesium carbonate is less than about 2,500 ppm.

Method for making 2,6-xylenol

A method for preparing a polyphenylene ether resin is described. In one embodiment the method comprises: preparing a magnesium-based alkylation catalyst, by dry-blending at least one filler with a magnesium reagent which yields magnesium oxide upon calcination; calcining the alkylation catalyst; reacting a phenolic compound and an alkyl alcohol in the presence of the alkylation catalyst, to form a 2,6-alkyl-disubstituted phenolic compound; and oxidatively coupling the 2,6-alkyl-disubstituted phenolic compound in the presence of a suitable polymerization catalyst, to form the polyphenylene ether resin.

Methods for preparing polyphenylene ether resin

A method for preparing a solid catalyst composition is described. A magnesium reagent which yields magnesium oxide upon calcination, and which includes reduced levels of chlorides and calcium, is dry-blended with at least one filler. Dry-blending is usually carried out in the absence of a promoter. A method for selectively alkylating at least one hydroxyaromatic compound by using the catalyst is also described. A typical product is 2,6-xylenol. Related processes for preparing polyphenylene ethers are described.

Methods for preparing an alkylation catalyst, and for ortho-alkylating hydroxyaromatic compounds; and related compositions

Thermosetting polymers and the electrical laminates made therefrom are disclosed. The laminate comprises a cross-linked product of: a) one or more ethylenically unsaturated aromatic monomers, with fire retardation being optionally contributed by one halogenated monomer, b) a vinyl-terminated polybutadiene or butadiene-styrene copolymer containing either a urethane or an ester group, and c) a chemically modified polyphenylene ether resin, preferably low molecular weight chemically modified polyphenylene ether resin. It has been discovered that an unexpected combination of thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties are obtained from the composition recited herein. Therefore, the composition is ideally suited as a matrix polymer for electrical substrate applications.
