An image forming apparatus includes: a photosensitive drum; a toner cartridge; and a developing unit that forms a toner image by visualizing a latent image formed on the photosensitive drum. The developing unit includes a feed opening through which toner is supplied from the toner cartridge, and a paddle that agitates toner supplied through the feed opening and feeds the toner in a direction of the photosensitive drum. The feed opening has an opening length shorter than a length in a direction of a rotary axis of the paddle, and the paddle includes a toner guide that diffuses the toner in the direction of the rotary axis of the paddle.

A paper feeding apparatus transports paper one by one through a transportation mechanism to an image forming unit of an image forming apparatus. The paper feeding apparatus includes a paper feed cassette to contain paper, a paper side guide arranged in the paper feed cassette to position the paper in a direction perpendicular or substantially perpendicular to a transport direction of the paper, and a dust removing roller arranged in the paper side guide and in contact with the paper contained in the paper feed cassette.

A photoconductive drum unit includes a frame, a photoconductive drum, and a scorotron charging unit. The charging unit includes a pair of mounting members, a discharging electrode filament, a shield casing, a grid, and a connecting member. The mounting members are mounted and fixed at both end portions of the frame. The discharging electrode filament extends between the mounting members in a tensioned state. The shield casing is supported by being connected between the mounting members and covers the discharging electrode filament. The grid extends between the mounting members in a tensioned state and is arranged in an opening of the shield casing. The connecting member connects the mounting members and the shield casing in a state in which a slight displacement is permitted between the mounting members and the shield casing.

An image forming apparatus includes an apparatus main body, a photoconductive drum, a transfer roller, a pair of guide supporting brackets, and an urging member. The guide supporting brackets include two paper transportation guides, and the brackets are mounted on both end portions of a drum shaft of the photoconductive drum in a manner capable of being swung about the drum shaft as a center. The paper transportation guides are arranged laterally at a predetermined interval therebetween on the guide supporting brackets. The urging member is provided in the apparatus main body. In a state in which the photoconductive drum is installed in the apparatus main body, swinging ends of the guide supporting brackets are pressed against the transfer roller by the urging member, and the paper transportation guides are positioned at a predetermined position in proximity of an upstream side of the nip portion in a paper transportation direction.

An automatic document transportation device includes a document tray, a document discharge tray, a transportation path, a document feed roller, a separating pad, transportation rollers, a Charge Coupled Device (CCD) scanning unit, a Contact Image Sensor (CIS) scanning unit and document discharge rollers. The document tray and the document discharge tray are provided vertically in two stages. The transportation path is formed in the sideways letter-U shape from the document tray to the document discharge tray. The document feed roller and the separating pad are provided in proximity to an inlet of the transportation path, and separate original documents by nipping the original documents in a thickness direction. The transportation rollers nip and transport the original document. The CCD scanning unit is provided directly downstream of a U-turn part of the transportation path and scans a first side of the transported original document. The CIS scanning unit is provided at downstream of the CCD scanning unit and scans a second side of the original document. The document discharge rollers nip and discharged the scanned original document. In a lateral cross-section of the automatic document transportation device, the CIS scanning unit is provided between and below the separating pad and the transportation roller provided directly downstream of the separating pad, and between the CCD scanning unit and the document discharge rollers.

Automatic document transportation device

An automatic document transportation device includes a shutter, a stopper and a shutter releasing mechanism. The shutter is provided at upstream of a document feed roller and suspended from a cover under a freely swinging state. The stopper is provided on a pickup arm, stops a swing of the shutter so that the shutter restricts a position of a leading edge of an original document on a document tray when the pickup arm is under a standby state, and releases the stop of the shutter when the pickup arm operates in a direction to make contact with the original document. The shutter releasing mechanism moves the pickup arm under the standby state in the direction to make contact with the original document.

An automatic document feeder (ADF) used in a facsimile machine, photocopier or the like. A sheet path from a sheet inlet to outlet is defined by lower, intermediate and upper frames of the ADF. The sheet path is generally shaped like &ldquo;C&rdquo; when viewed laterally. The intermediate frame has a pivotable member that can be opened and closed, and a guide member for guiding a sheet passing over a platen glass. An elastic member is provided for biasing the guide member on the platen surface from a turning portion of the C-shaped sheet path. Therefore, it is possible to maintain a clearance between the platen surface and guide member and prevent the sheet from flapping. A retard roller is removably supported by the pivotable member so that replacing and maintenance of the retard roller is simplified. Further, the pivotable member is a one-piece element and made from resin. A plurality of ribs extending in a sheet feed direction are provided near the sheet inlet and/or outlet so that the weight of the automatic document feeder is reduced and movements of the sheets are facilitated.

Automatic sheet feeder

A drive power transmission system located between a paper feed roller and a motor for transmitting a drive power to the paper feed roller from the motor only when a load acting on the paper feed roller in a direction opposite a rotating direction of the paper feed roller is smaller than a certain amount. The drive power transmission system is incorporated in an image processing device such as a facsimile machine. The paper feed roller and other rollers such as separation roller and retard roller cooperate to feed a sheet of paper from a stack of paper on a paper tray one sheet at a time. Eventually all the sheets are picked up from the paper tray and the paper feed roller directly contacts the paper tray. In this case, an excessively large shock or load acts on the paper feed roller and various associated parts which are provided to drive the paper feed roller such as a gear train mechanism. The drive power transmission system includes a coil spring which is unwound to disconnect the motor from the paper feed roller so as not to transmit the drive power to the paper feed roller when such a large load is exerted on the paper feed roller.
