An apparatus and a method for generating a channel estimate using a non-pilot signal. More specifically, there is provided a receiver comprising a device configured to receive a transmitted signal having a pilot portion and non-pilot portion and a channel estimator configured to calculate a channel estimate based on the non-pilot portion of the transmitted signal and to send the channel estimate to the device. A method for implementing the improvement is also provided.

The present invention provides a method for reducing transmitted energy based on early decoding. The method includes accessing a first portion of a block including a plurality of symbols indicative of an encoded message. The first portion has been transmitted at a first transmission power and having less than all of the plurality of symbols. The method also includes attempting to decode the encoded message using the first portion of the block, determining whether the encoded message was decoded, and providing an indication of a second transmission power in response to determining that the encoded message was decoded.

Method and apparatus for reducing transmitted energy in power-controlled systems based on early decoding

A method for conveying signaling information of a communication system that uses MIMO antenna systems. To enable a relatively larger amount of information to be conveyed over the communication system and thus exploit the use of the MIMO antenna system, forward link signaling channels are provided where such channels contain swapping information that allow the communication system to retransmit traffic information using any one of the antenna elements of a MIMO system. The forward link signaling channels also contain channel assignment information that indicate which particular groups of channels are available for use by particular users of the communication system. To further accommodate for the relatively larger amount of information being conveyed over the communication system, the format of the reverse link signaling information is modified using any one or any combination of the following three mechanisms: (1) reverse signaling link information is time division multiplexed; (2) the reverse link information is modulated at relatively higher order modulation; (3) additional channels are provided for the reverse link information.

Signaling and control mechanisms in MIMO harq schemes for wireless communication systems

A method and apparatus for reducing the bit rate of multi-input systems that employ space-time coding by displacing in signal space the derivatives of a symbol. A mapped particular symbol is space-time coded to generate transmit-sequences having a phase-shifted version of the particular symbol, the phase-shifted version and the particular symbol differing in phase by an amount other than by 90&#xb0;, 180&#xb0;, and 270&#xb0;. In one embodiment, the particular symbol represents a point in a first symbol constellation and the derivatives of the particular symbol represent points in a displaced symbol constellation. In another embodiment, the particular symbol and another symbol are space-time coded to form the transmit-sequences. The derivatives of the particular symbol represent points in a first symbol constellation and derivatives of the other symbol represent points of a second symbol constellation. The two constellations are displaced versions of each other. The displacement can be a phase shift and/or a change in amplitude. Illustratively, the two symbols are ones whose received versions interfere with each other after the two transmit-sequences are space-time decoded at the receiver. Displacing the derivatives of symbols reduces the bit error rate and thus increases the capacity of the system. Particularly, such a displacement increases the distance between symbols of a constellation whose points represent the combination of the derivatives of two the symbols.

Quasi-orthogonal space-time codes

The encoding system includes a feed unit receiving data and producing N data streams, where N is at least two. Each of N encoders receives a respective one of the N data streams and produces an encoded data stream. A multiple input multiple output (MIMO) encoder receives the N encoded data streams and encodes the N encoded data streams into M output data stream for transmission by M transmit antennas, where M is at least two. In the decoding system, a MIMO decoder receives T data streams from T receive antennas and decodes the T data streams into the N encoded data streams. Each of N decoders receives a respective one of the N encoded data streams from the MIMO decoder and produces N decoded data streams. A combiner combines the N decoded data streams into an output data stream.

Encoding system for multi-antenna transmitter and decoding system for multi-antenna receiver

A method for allocating data rate to a stream of information to be transmitted over a communication channel of a communication system is provided. Modified union bounds are used to determine the channel characteristic experienced by each of the streams to select their respective data rates from an MCS that can be handled by the communication channel of the communication system.
