An exhaust purification apparatus for an engine uses a catalytic converter provided in an exhaust system of the engine. First and second exhaust sensors are provided on upstream and downstream sides, respectively, of the catalyst converter in the exhaust system. Detected values from the first and second exhaust sensors are used for feed back control of air fuel ratio and judging deterioration of the catalyst of the catalytic converter, respectively. A control constant of the air fuel ratio of the feed back control is changed so that the second exhaust sensor detects in accordance with a condition of the catalyst.

Exhaust purification apparatus for an engine

In a vehicle provided with an automatic transmission, gear-shifting shock is suppressed by changing the engine output power in response to a gear-shifting. The change in the engine output power is terminated when the actual engine speed reaches a completion decision engine speed, which is determined so that it corresponds to the time when the gear-shifting is completed, which is based on the fact that the engine speed changes according to a certain characteristic curve during the gear-shifting. The engine speed at which the gear-shifting is actually completed is detected for each gear-shifting according to the change in the rotational speed of the engine during the gear-shifting, and the completion decision rotational speed for each gear-shifting is set through learning on the basis of the preceding engine speed at which the gear shifting was actually completed.

Method of suppressing gear-shifting shock in an automatic-transmission

An exhaust system for an automobile engine having two groups of cylinders has a catalytic device. Deterioration of the catalytic device is detected based on an oxygen level in exhaust gas passed through the catalytic device. A feedback control of an air-fuel ratio is conducted for the cylinder groups all together, based on either of the air-fuel ratios determined, based on emission levels of exhaust gas discharged, for one of two of the groups of cylinders, only when a specific vehicle driving condition is detected.

Exhaust system for internal combustion engine

A vehicle is provided with an engine and an automatic transmission having a lockup mechanism which engages and disengages to directly connect and disconnect input and output shafts of a torque converter of the automatic transmission to and from each other. A control system for such a vehicle has a deceleration detecting circuit which detects that the engine is decelerating based on the engine speed and a throttle opening, and a lockup mechanism control circuit which causes the lockup mechanism to engage when the engine is decelerating and permits the same to disengage when the deceleration of the engine finishes. The control system inhibits the lockup mechanism control circuit from causing the lockup mechanism to disengage in a period in which the engine speed can temporarily fall because of the automatic transmission's shifting into neutral in the process of a downshift.

Control system for vehicle provided with automatic transmission

According to the lockup device of a fluid transmission under the present invention, at the decelerating running when the change rate of engine load exceeds a set value, a lockup control pattern is changed so that the area where the lockup device is controlled to perfect friction or to the specified friction force. By this change, at the decelerating running large engine brake force can be worked and a good feeling of deceleration can be given to a driver. In the case where fuel supply to the engine is suspended at the decelerating running of the engine, transmission of large engine brake force as mentioned above results in comparatively longer time of maintaining high engine speed and longer time of fuel supply cutting off, with consequent saving of fuel consumption. Moreover, by changing the target slip quantity to the increasing side at the accelerating running, torque increasing action at the accelerating running is displayed effectively and accelerability can be improved. At the normal running, lowering of specific fuel consumption due to slip of the torque converter can be checked by setting a target slip quantity small. Thus, coexistence of improvement of accelerability and improvement of specific fuel consumption can be planned.

Lockup control device of a fluid transmission

A controller controls an engine in cooperation with an automatic transmission which is automatically locked when an operating speed of the engine is higher than a previously established transmission lockup speed. The controller includes an engine power increasing device when an operating engine speed becomes lower than the transmission lockup release speed. The transmission lockup release speed is corrected according to deceleration rates.
