An image reading apparatus according to an embodiment includes an image reading unit configured to generate reference data by reading a reference surface and to generate image data by reading a sheet. A reference unit has a reference surface. A shading correction unit determines whether a portion of the reference surface includes a contaminant based on image data generated by the image reading unit reading the portion of the reference unit. When the portion of the reference surface is determined to not include a contaminant, the shading correction unit generates reference data based on the image data generated by the image reading unit reading the portion of the reference surface determined to not include a contaminant.

In general, according to one embodiment, a scanner includes an original document stand, a pressure plate, a carriage, an image sensor, an amplification unit, and a processor. In an image reading apparatus, the invention provides a method for detecting foreign matter which may adhere to a white reference plate, and correcting a reference value when foreign matter is detected. The method includes computing an average of read values, comparing an absolute value of difference between the computed average value and data of the next read position to a predetermined threshold, and when a determining unit determines that foreign matter adheres to the reference plate, replacing the average value used for the determination of whether or not the foreign matter adheres to the reference plate with the read data.
