A tool for a plug, including a plug body fitted to an adapter and a slider supported on the plug body, includes an insertion portion and a handle. The insertion portion is configured to catch the slider. The handle extends in a direction opposite to the insertion portion. The handle includes a fragile part having a locally small cross-sectional area perpendicular to the direction in which the handle extends.

A tool for a plug to which a cable having its basal end covered with a boot is attached is disclosed. The plug includes a plug body fitted to an adapter and a slider supported on the plug body. The tool includes an insertion portion that catches the slider, and a boot surrounding part that has a sleeve-like shape and accepts insertion of the cable and the boot, to accommodate the boot while the insertion portion is catching the slider. The boot surrounding part includes a slit extending along an entire length in an axial direction of the boot surrounding part and having a width greater than a diameter of the cable and smaller than a maximum diameter of the boot. While the insertion portion is catching the slider, the boot surrounding part is positioned inner than an outermost shape line of the plug as seen in the axial direction.

A connector plug, having: a plug body that houses an optical fiber inside; a latch that is supported on an outer surface of the plug body to be capable of being engaged with the adapter; a slider that is supported on the plug body to be slidable with respect to the plug body; and a stopper that is detachably attachable between the plug body and the slider, wherein the slider is capable of elastically deforming the latch toward the outer surface of the plug body, when the slider is slid in a detaching direction which is a direction of drawing the connector plug out of the adapter, the slider elastically deforms the latch toward the outer surface of the plug body, and when the stopper is attached between the plug body and the slider, the stopper restricts the slider from elastically deforming the latch toward the outer surface of the plug body.

A connector plug has a connector plug body, a slider supported on the connector plug body and a jig attachable to the slider. The jig has an insertion portion which can be inserted into a slot of the slider and an operation portion extended from the insertion portion. The insertion portion has first and second insertion portions separated from each other by a predetermined distance. The slider can be moved in the detaching direction when the jig is moved in the detaching direction in a state that a first locking portion of the first insertion portion and a second locking portion of the second insertion portion are locked to the inner wall of the slot, and the locked state of the first locking portion and the second locking portion can be released when a force is applied to the operation portion in an inside direction to shorten the predetermined distance.

An optical fiber assembly having a hermetic seal portion includes a optical fiber assembly and a metal pipe. The optical fiber assembly includes a metallized portion where a portion exposed by peeling off a resin coating of the optical fiber assembly is coated with metal. The metal pipe includes a feedthrough hole, an uncovered portion, a brazed portion and an adhesive-fixed portion. The feedthrough hole has a length necessary to cover a part of the metallized portion and a part of the coated portion leading to one end of the metallized portion. The uncovered portion has a housing groove leading to the feedthrough hole and contains a remainder of the metallized portion and a part of the coated portion leading to the other end of the metallized portion. The brazed portion hermetically seals the optical fiber assembly to the metal pipe by brazing the metallized portion and the inner surface of the feedthrough hole near a slanted upward opening of the feedthrough hole on the housing groove side. The adhesive-fixed portion allows the optical fiber assembly to be disposed on the uncovered portion adhere to the metal pipe and fixed thereto.

There is provided an optical fiber to be coupled to a laser diode light source. The optical fiber has a wedge-shaped lens for decreasing the influence of reflection light B and returning reflection light B , whereby the laser diode light source can be operated with stability. The wedged and lensed optical fiber according to the present invention is arranged such that the optical fiber is formed to have a wedge-shaped lens at the tip end thereof, a ridge as a rooftop is made to include the center tip end of a core, the ridge is inclined by an inclination angle &bgr; with respect to a plane perpendicular to the optical axis of the optical fiber, and the ridge is formed into a semi-cylindrical surface or a conical surface.

An eccentric optical fiber connector ferrule according to the present invention comprises an optical fiber in which a coating at an end thereof is removed to expose the end of the fiber, a metallic coating bonded to a part of a side face at the end of the optical fiber in an axial direction, and a ferrule receiving the end of the optical fiber, to which the metallic coating is bonded, in a central hole, for supporting it while applying a specified eccentricity. By recessing the optical fiber end face of the eccentric optical fiber connector ferrule from the ferrule end face by 0.2 to 2.0 &mgr;m, the damage at the end of the optical fiber can be prevented.

A polishing holder arm includes a polishing holder mounting/dismounting device having a base section supported by a base plate through a horizontally rotational shaft to permit the device to rotate and move upward from an approximately horizontal position and the other end section engaged with the polishing holder H. The holder H includes a coupling section whose rotation is restricted by the polishing holder arm and which is detachably coupled with the polishing holder mounting/dismounting device at a center. A polishing force applying device A moves between a position where it applies a downward spring urging force to the polishing holder arm and a position where it permits the polishing holder arm to rotate and move upward. With this arrangement, the optical fiber end surface polishing device causes the polishing holder H to be easily mounded and dismounted on and from the polishing holder arm; can adjust a polishing force double and permits the polishing holder arm to jump upward and rotate at least 90.degree. from an approximately horizontal position.

An optical fiber ferrule assembly is equipped with an angular index for indicating a polarization plane of an optical fiber. The assembly includes a polarization plane maintaining optical fiber, an optical fiber ferrule for accommodating the optical fiber so that the optical fiber is fixed thereto in a state that a tip end surface of the optical fiber is exposed, and an angular index member. The angular index member is rotatable with respect to the ferrule. The optical fiber is fixed to the optical fiber ferrule and the angular index member and the optical fiber ferrule are temporarily assembled. Then the tip end surface of the optical fiber is enlarged for observation to decide the polarization plane thereof on the basis of its configuration, and the angular index member and the optical fiber ferrule are relatively rotated. They are then fixed to each other so that the angular index makes a predetermined angle relative to the polarization plane.

An optical attenuator comprising an optical fiber and at least a light attenuating portion disposed on the optical fiber. The light attenuating portion is formed such that a part of the optical fiber is heated by an opposing pair of discharge electrodes or gas burners and then compressed in the axial direction to provide a spherically contoured light attenuating portion or pulled in the axial direction to provide a light attenuating portion having a reduced diameter. In addition, a method and an apparatus for producing an optical fiber of the foregoing type are disclosed. The method is practiced by way of the steps of heating a part of an optical fiber and then physically deforming the heated part to serve as a light attenuating portion by compressing or pulling it in the axial direction. The apparatus includes as essential components a stationary clamp jig, and a movable clamp jig arranged opposite to the stationary clamp jig and an opposing pair of discharge electrodes or gas burners for heating a part of the optical fiber. The movable clamp jig is displaced toward or away from the stationary clamp jig by rotationally actuating a micrometer.
