The purpose of the present invention is to provide a redox flow secondary battery which has low electrical resistance and excellent current efficiency in addition to durability. The present invention relates to: an electrolyte membrane for redox flow secondary batteries, which contains an ion exchange resin composition containing a fluorine-based polymer electrolyte; and a redox flow secondary battery which uses the electrolyte membrane for redox flow secondary batteries.

The problem addressed by the present invention is to obtain an electrolyte membrane that, as an electrolyte membrane for a redox flow secondary battery, is able to suppress the ion permeability of an active substance without detracting from proton (H+) permeability, has superior ion-selective permeability, has low electrical resistivity, and has superior current efficiency. The present invention solves the abovementioned problem by means of the electrolyte membrane for a redox flow secondary battery containing a perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin having a specific structure and an equivalent weight (EW), and the ion conductivity being adjusted to a predetermined range.

The present invention aims to provide an ionomer that can exhibit high oxygen permeability, especially under both low- and high-humidified conditions, and high power generation durability. The high oxygen permeable ionomer includes a specific repeating unit A and repeating unit B and has an equivalent weight of 250 to 930 and a glass transition temperature of 100&#xb0; C. to 130&#xb0; C.

This redox flow secondary battery has an electrolyte tank () containing: a positive electrode cell chamber () containing a positive electrode () comprising a carbon electrode; a negative electrode cell chamber () containing a negative electrode () comprising a carbon electrode; and an electrolyte membrane () as a barrier membrane that separates/isolates the positive electrode cell chamber () and the negative electrode cell chamber (). The positive electrode cell chamber () contains a positive electrode electrolyte containing an active substance, the negative electrode cell chamber () contains a negative electrode electrolyte containing an active substance, and the redox flow secondary battery charges and discharges on the basis of the change in valency of the active substances in the electrolytes. The electrolyte membrane () contains an ion exchange resin composition that is primarily a polyelectrolyte polymer, and the electrolyte membrane () has a reinforcing material comprising a fluorine-based porous membrane.

An object of the present invention is to provide a redox flow secondary battery being low in the electric resistance and excellent in the current efficiency as well, and further having the durability. The present invention relates to an electrolyte membrane for a redox flow secondary battery, the electrolyte membrane containing an ion-exchange resin composition containing a fluorine-based polyelectrolyte polymer, and having an ion cluster diameter of 1.00 to 2.95 nm as measured in water at 25&#xb0; C. by a small angle X-ray method, and to a redox flow secondary battery using the electrolyte membrane.

A method for producing an electrolyte emulsion, the method including: Step (1) in which an ethylenic fluoromonomer and a fluorovinyl compound having an SOZgroup, wherein Zis a halogen element, are copolymerized at a polymerization temperature of 0&#xb0; C. or higher and 40&#xb0; C. or lower to provide a precursor emulsion containing a fluoropolymer electrolyte precursor; and Step (2) in which a basic reactive liquid is added to the precursor emulsion and the fluoropolymer electrolyte precursor is chemically treated, whereby an electrolyte emulsion with a fluoropolymer electrolyte dispersed therein is provided, wherein the electrolyte emulsion has an equivalent weight (EW) of 250 or more and 700 or less.

An object of the present invention is to provide a polymer electrolyte membrane meeting power generation properties and physical durability at the same time and having high durability. The present invention provides a fluoropolymer electrolyte material which has improved processability and which is easily produced. The electrolyte emulsion of the present invention comprises an aqueous medium and a fluoropolymer electrolyte dispersed in the aqueous medium. The fluoropolymer electrolyte has a monomer unit having an SOZ group (Z is an alkali metal, an alkaline-earth metal, hydrogen, or NRRRR, and R, R, R, and Reach are individually a C1-C3 alkyl group or hydrogen). The fluoropolymer electrolyte has an equivalent weight (EW) of 250 or more and 700 or less and a proton conductivity at 110&#xb0; C. and relative humidity 50% RH of 0.10 S/cm or higher. The fluoropolymer electrolyte is a spherical particulate substance having an average particle size of 10 to 500 nm. The fluoropolymer electrolyte has a ratio (the number of SOF groups)/(the number of SOZ groups) of 0 to 0.01.

A coating material including a perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin which is a copolymer including a polymerization unit represented by &#x2014;(CF&#x2014;CFZ)&#x2014;, in the formula, Z being H, Cl, F, or a C1-C3 perfluoroalkyl group, and a polymerization unit represented by &#x2014;(CF&#x2014;CF(&#x2014;O&#x2014;(CF)&#x2014;SOH))&#x2014;, in the formula, m being an integer of 1 to 12, and the perfluorocarbon sulfonic acid resin has an equivalent weight EW of 200 to 1000. Also disclosed is a laminate including a base material and a hydrophilic layer formed from the coating material.
