The invention provides a thin film magnetic head including an upper core layer 9 which comprises a front first core layer 91a formed on a gap spacer layer 6 and having the same width as a track width on the recording medium at least in the vicinity of the face to be opposed to a recording medium, and a second core layer 92 extending from the medium-opposed face over the upper surface of the front first core layer 91a and further over the upper surface of an upper insulating layer 72. The upper core layer 9 has a thickness greater in a region extending from the medium-opposed face to a depth end restricting face DE of a lower insulating layer 71 than in a region extending over the upper surface of the upper insulating layer 72. The front first core layer 91a has an upper surface flush with the upper surface of the lower insulating layer 71. This structure gives an accurate track width and assures production with a high yield.

Process for producing thin film magnetic heads

A process for producing a thin film magnetic head comprises a first step of forming a magnetic layer 20 on the surface of a gap spacer layer 9, a second step of forming on the surface of the magnetic layer 20 a lower resist layer 21 shaped to have a smaller width than an upper core layer 11 when seen from above and forming on the resist layer 21 an upper resist layer 22 projecting outward beyond opposite side faces of the resist layer 21 and shaped in conformity with the shape of the upper core layer 11 when seen from above, a third step of shaping the magnetic layer 20 into the upper core layer 11 by ion beam-etching the magnetic layer 20, and a fourth step of removing the lower resist layer 21 and the upper resist layer 22. The core layer 11 consequently formed has a surface including a pair of curved faces R, R smoothly connecting opposite side faces of the layer 11 with respect to the direction of width of a track to the top face of the layer 11, enabling a protective layer forming step to provide a flawless protective layer 14.

Thin film magnetic head and process for producing same

A composite thin film head comprises a magnetoresistive head portion and an inductive head portion which are superposed on a substrate, the inductive head portion comprising a lower core layer disposed on one side of a gap spacer layer and adjacent to the magnetoresistive head portion, and an upper core layer disposed on the other side of the gap spacer layer. The lower core layer comprises a core portion positioned toward the upper core layer having the same width as the upper core layer in the vicinity of a medium-opposed face, and a shield portion positioned toward the magnetoresistive head portion having a larger width than the core portion in the vicinity of the medium-opposed face.

A magnetoresistive head includes a magnetoresistive film and a magnetic domain control layer, formed by a paramagnetic film which is provided in contact with the magnetoresistive film and an antiferromagnetic film which is provided in contact with the paramagnetic film, provided in contact with the magnetoresistive film.

Magnetoresistive head having a magnetic domain control layer

A thin film head of the floating type includes a head slider 1 having a surface to be opposed to the signal face of a recording medium with a small space formed therebetween. At least one head element 2 is formed by thin film forming techniques on a face of the head slider 1 orthogonal to the slider surface. A protective layer 3 is formed over the head slider face and covers the head element 2. The head slider 1 has a pair of side faces orthogonal to the slider surface to be opposed to the medium and extending in parallel to each other respectively at opposite sides of the head element 2. The protective layer 3 is formed at each of its opposite side portions with a bulging-out curved face R smoothly extending from the surface of the protective layer 3 to the side face of the head slider 1.

Process for producing a thin film head of the floating type

A thin film magnetic head comprising a lower magnetic core layer 9 and an upper magnetic core layer 12 formed over the core layer 9 with a coil layer 10, a gap spacer layer 11 and an insulating layer provided therebetween, the core layers 9 and 12 each having a core tip region c between a core tip a and a portion b increasing in core width. The core layers 9 and 12 are each formed by a magnetic thin film of NiFe having a positive magnetostriction constant of not greater than 1.times.10.sup.-6 in absolute value and containing 17.5 to 19.5 wt. % of Fe.

Thin film magnetic head

A magneto-resistive head has an upper shield layer, a lower shield layer spaced a distance from the upper shield layer, a magneto-resistive layer disposed over the lower shield layer, a shunt layer disposed adjacent to the magneto-resistive layer for giving a magnetic bias field to the magneto-resistive layer, and a electrode layer in contact with the magneto-resistance device and the shunt layer for providing an electric current to both of the magneto-resistive layer and the shunt layer electric current. The magneto-resistive layer, the shunt layer and the electrode layer are disposed between the upper shield and the lower shield. The shunt layer consist of molybdenum having a grain size more than 150 angstrom. The shunt layer has low specific resistance. Therefore, the thickness of the shunt layer can be reduced. As a result, the distance between the upper and lower shield layer can be reduced. Consequently, the gap length of the magneto-resistive head is narrower than prior art magnetic heads.

A thin film magnetic head including a lower magnetic core and an upper magnetic core formed of thin films for forming a magnetic circuit with coil windings therebetween enclosed in non magnetic material. The upper core includes an upper magnetic layer, a lower magnetic layer and a discontinuous non-magnetic intermediate layer of a plurality of non-magnetic stripes.

Thin film magnetic head having upper magnetic core layer with layers

A working amount detecting marker formed by laminating first and second marker layers each having a predetermined shape when seen from above. Two sides contouring the respective marker layers intersect each other at a point located at a specified position where working is to be completed. When the portion of a magnetic head to be opposed to magnetic recording media is formed by grinding or grooving, the sectional configuration appears on the ground surface, indicating whether the amount of grinding or grooving is insufficient or excessive. The point of intersection, when appearing on the ground surface, readily indicates completion of grinding or grooving with high accuracy.
