Optical pickup, manufacturing method thereof, and optical disk system

An optical pickup for reading information written on an optical disk is equipped with a laser diode having a front facet which emits light, a parallel light ray portion which collimates the emitted light from the laser diode, means for focusing collimated output light onto the optical disk, means for receiving reflected light from the optical disk, and an optical element having an index of refraction of 1 or higher for adjusting the length of the optical path between the front facet of the laser diode and the optical disk, wherein the optical element is inserted in the parallel light ray portion when the optical path length lies within the range of the expression'(n&#x2212;0.5&#xb1;0.25)&#xd7;the effective cavity length of the laser diode' (where n is a positive integer) in order to reduce the noise in the emitted light of the laser diode.

Optical pickup and optical disk system

A sub-mount () provided with a laser chip () and a light receiving element () for monitoring is bonded to a die pad portion () of a first lead (). An electrode of the laser chip and an electrode of the light receiving element are electrically connected to second leads () by wires such as metallic wires, not shown, respectively. A resin frame () is provided to cover sides and a rear surface side of the sub-mount except for an emission surface side of the laser chip and to integrally hold one end portion sides of the first and second leads. An antireflection unit () for preventing light from being reflected on the light receiving element is formed on a portion of the resin frame opposite to the rear end face of the laser chip. As a result, it is possible to obtain a mold type semiconductor laser capable of constantly detect accurate laser chip output and capable of forming an accurate optical output control circuit.

Mold type semiconductor laser

The laser sensor comprises: a laser source ( ), a condenser lens ( ) for converging the light from the laser source, and a pin hole plate ( ) disposed adjacent to the condenser lens in the opposite side to the laser source, so that its pin hole ( ) is in the converging beam converged by the condenser lens. A light detecting portion is disposed at a converging portion of the light so as to face to the light beam passed the pin hole. The diameter of the pin hole is 0.4 to 0.7 mm. As a result, a small diameter beam having a constant diameter over a long section, which is longer than 100 mm, is obtained, so that the laser sensor can be used, irrespective to a small change of the detecting position. Further, the laser sensor allows to use a plastics lens as the condenser lens.

Laser sensor having a pinhole for particle measurement

An optical system includes a semiconductor laser. The semiconductor laser is accommodated within a case. The case is formed with a window to pass through laser light emitted from the semiconductor laser. The laser light passed through the window comes to a collimator lens. Between semiconductor laser and the collimator lens is provided a light shield member having a pinhole to pass through the laser light having passed the window. Laser light made in a parallel luminous flux is outputted from the collimator lens. This laser light is deflected toward a main scanning direction by a deflector and further collected on a scanning surface by a light collector.

A light receiving unit comprises a condenser lens ( ) which converges laser beam and a light receiving unit ( ) which receives the incident beam converged by the condenser lens. The light receiving element is formed, such that the light receiving portion thereof has an area of 2 mm or less and disposed at the side of the condenser lens than the point P where the beam is converged by the condenser lens and at the position more apart from the condenser lens than the position F of the focal distance of the condenser lens. As a consequence, a light receiving unit which detects the laser beam can be obtained, the light receiving unit enabling it possible to always receive the laser beam regardless of a little eccentricity of a laser source while the speed of response is raised.

Laser beam receiving unit

An optical pickup includes a hologram unit. The hologram unit includes a hologram pattern formed circular by dividing into two and then joining together first and second patterns formed in the entire circular region. The first pattern is designed to minimize a sub-beam spot on a light-receiving device based on an optical path length and wavelength when a &plus;1-order sub-beam is taken as a light source. The second pattern is designed to minimize the sub-beam spot on the light-receiving device based on an optical path length and wavelength when a &minus;1-order sub-beam is taken as a light source.

Optical pickup and hologram device

An optical pickup includes a photo-detector. The photo-detector is structured by light receiving elements on one of which a blind zone is formed. If a relationship between an output of the light receiving element formed with a blind zone and a lens position is displayed as a graph on a measurement signal output device, a point that a beam converges on the blind zone, i.e., a point that a spot size assumes a minimum, is displayed as an edge. In the photo-detector, a region for receiving a sub-beam on light shield side, i.e., one sub-beam having a grater spot size, has a width broader than a width of a region for receiving a sub-beam on an aperture side, i.e., another sub-beam smaller in spot size.

Modified light-receiving element in an optical pickup for reading optical discs

A rod lens or a cylindrical lens is disposed in front of a semiconductor laser to increase a divergence angle of a laser beam emitted from the semiconductor laser so as to form a substantially circular far field pattern. In another constitution, there is disposed in front of a semiconductor laser a composite lens having two cylindrical surfaces whose cylindrical axes are perpendicular to each other. The cylindrical surface on the side of the semiconductor laser is a convex surface and the other cylindrical surface is a convex or concave surface. In still another constitution, two semiconductor lasers emitting the same optical signal are arranged adjacent each other so that respective light emitting portions of two pn junction planes are located in the same plane and perpendicular to each other, and that laser beams form orthogonal spots at a single predetermined position.

Disclosed is an optical branching and coupling device of high quality which is prevented from malfunction, corrosion and deterioration due to condensation on optical components incorporated therein by virtue of perfect sealing. The optical branching and coupling device including a housing provided with an aperture, optical instruments, associated with the housing, for branching, coupling, transmitting and receiving optical information input to the device, and an aspherical lens inserted into the aperture and fixed thereto by hermetic sealing with a glass material, the aspherical lens being adapted to connect at an end face thereof with at least one optical fiber.

Optical branching and coupling device using an aspherical lens

An optical communication unit includes a light emitting element for emitting a transmission signal light; a condenser lens for coupling the transmission signal light from the light emitting element to an optical transmission path; and a light receiving element for receiving a receiving signal light from the optical transmission path. A light emitting surface in the light emitting element is formed by a plane tilted to a perpendicular plane in a substrate surface of a chip in the light emitting element.

Optical communication unit

A transceiver module for optical communication includes a light-emitting element, a light-receiving element and a rod lens. Light from the light-emitting element is condensed onto the top end of the rod lens. A ferrule of an optical fiber is brought into physical contact with the top end surface of the rod lens so as to couple the light-emitting element and the light-receiving element with the optical fiber. The rod lens is held by a support supported by a spring member on a housing, and the outer diameter of the rod lens is formed so as to be substantially equal to the outer diameter of the ferrule. An opening portion is provided in the housing so that the top end of the ferrule of the optical fiber is slidably fitted into one end of a sleeve, the other end of which is slidably fitted onto the outer circumference of the rod lens. Also, a transceiver module includes a light-emitting element for emitting transmission signal light, a coupling lens for connecting the transmission signal light emitted from the light-emitting element to a light transmission path, and a light-receiving element for receiving detection signal light from the light transmission path, in which the transmission signal light emitted from the light-emitting element is reflected on a surface of the light-receiving element and connected to the light transmission path through the coupling lens; and the detection signal light from the light transmission path is received by the light-receiving element.
