Room temperature curing composition

Resin composition suitable as water-based paint and process for forming

This invention relates to a room temperature curing composition for use in various coatings for interior and exterior sidings, automotive bodies, household electrical appliances and plastic substrates and particularly for coatings required to have weather resistance and durability. The room temperature curing composition of this invention comprises an emulsion obtained by a multi-stage polymerization of monomers, said emulsion comprising emulsion particles, the core of which is formed by polymerization of (A) a silyl group-containing vinyl monomer, (B) an alkyl or cycloalkyl methacrylate whose alkyl moiety contains not less than 4 carbon atoms, and (C) a non-hydrophilic vinyl monomer other than (B) and the outer shell of which is formed by polymerization of (A), (B), (C) and (D) a hydrophilic vinyl monomer. The room temperature curing composition of this invention features a high stability of silyl groups it contains and a remarkably improved film-forming property even after prolonged storage. Moreover, it is very satisfactory in mechanical stability, water resistance, durability and white enamel gloss.

A monomer mixture (B) containing a vinyl monomer having a functional silyl group of the general formula (ii) is subjected to emulsion polymerization in an aqueous solution of a water-soluble resin (A) having a functional silyl group of the general formula (i) the water-soluble resin [A] is synthesized using, as a polymerization solvent, a water-soluble organic solvent containing a (poly)ethylene glycol monoalkyl ether of the general formula HO--(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.n --R.sup.3 or a (poly)propylene glycol monoalkyl ether of the general formula HO--(C.sub.3 H.sub.6 O).sub.n --R.sup.4 ; ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 each independently is a monovalent group selected from the class consisting of alkyl groups containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms, aryl groups and aralkyl groups, X is a group selected from the class consisting of halogen atoms, alkoxy groups, a hydroxy group, acyloxy groups, an aminoxy group, a phenoxy group, thioalkoxy groups and an amino group, a and b each independently is an integer of 0 to 2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 each is an alkyl group containing 1 to 10 carbon atoms and n is an integer of 1 to 10 and wherein, when two or more R.sup.1 and/or R.sup.2 or X groups are bound to Si, they respectively may be the same or different.

Aqueous dispersion composition and production thereof

A curable resin comprising units of at least one prepolymer selected from the group consisting of a prepolymer (C) and a prepolymer (F); the prepolymer (C) having the formula (I): ##STR1## and the prepolymer (F) having the formula (III): ##STR2## The curable resin has the excellent flexibility, solvent resistance and adhesion to organic materials and the properties thereof can be controlled accordingly to desire, in addition to the excellent curability at ordinary temperature, adhesion to inorganic materials and weatherability.

A room temperature curable composition suitable as top coat and providing coating films having good properties such as surface appearance, gloss, stain resistance, weatherability and adhesion and a small contact angle with water, which comprises (A) an acrylic copolymer having a specific reactive silicon-containing group such as alkoxysilyl group, (B) a specific hydrolyzable silicon compound and/or its partial hydrolysis condensation product, (C) a specific curing catalyst such as an organic carboxylic acid, a combination of an organic carboxylic acid with an organic amine, or an organometallic compound, and (D) an adhesion improving agent such as a silane coupling agent or its reaction product with an epoxy compound.

A room temperature cross-linkable aqueous composition which contains an emulsion-polymerized copolymer comprising (I) a reaction product prepared by reacting (A) a monomer having at least one polymerizable double bond and a silyl group represented by the general formula (I): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 : monovalent hydrocarbon selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1-10 alkyl, aryl and aralkyl, X: a halogen, alkoxy, hydroxyl, acyloxy, aminoxy, phenoxy, thioalkoxy, or amino, a: 0, 1 or 2, and (B) a basic compound; and (II) a vinyl monomer copolymerizable with said (I) reaction product, and a process for preparing the same. The composition of the present invention has excellent storage stability and excellent room temperature cross-linkability which can be polymerized in stable condition without gelation.

The curable composition comprising (A) an alkoxysilyl group-containing acrylic copolymer or a mixture therof with a hydroxyl group-containing acrylic resin, (B) a curing catalyst, (C) an organic solvent and (D) fine particles of a cross-linked polymer which is insoluble but stably dispersible in the components (A), (B) and (C), the cross-linked polymer (D) comprising (d1) a backbone polymer polymerized from a monomer mixture having mainly an alkyl acrylate and (d2) a grafted phase polymerized in the presence of the backbone polymer (d1) from a monomer mixtuer having mainly an alkyl methacrylate. The composition of the present invention is improved in sag resistance as well as excellent in durability and film appearance, so a satisfactorily thick film can be obtained by one application of the composition.

A curable composition at room temperature comprising (A) 100 parts by weight of a hydrolyzable silyl group-containing vinyl polymer, (B) 0.1 to 100 parts by weight of a specific silane compound and (C) 0 to 20 parts by weight of a curing catalyst, the silane compound (B) being a silane compound selected from ##STR1## The composition is excellent in not only adhesion to melamine alkyd or malamine acrylic resin coatings but also hardness, solvent resistance and staining resistance.
