A wireless communication device has an aim of specifying, when transmitting data to another communication device, an antenna among antennas that can transmit data at a low transmission power. The wireless communication device switches between a first antenna and a second antenna upon transmission of a request signal to the other communication device, and increases or decreases transmission power for transmitting the request signal when switching between the first antenna and the second antenna.

In a receiver, a channel estimation unit estimates channel characteristics of each channel, and a weight generation unit generates a weight matrix used in equalization processing by an equalizer in accordance with the estimated values of channel characteristics for each channel as estimated by the channel estimation unit. Furthermore, a likelihood calculation unit calculates a likelihood indicating a degree of certainty for each transmission stream using the weight matrix generated by the weight generation unit, and an adaptive control unit determines a transmission rate appropriate for transmission of a signal from a transmitter to the receiver in accordance with the likelihood of each transmission stream calculated by the likelihood calculation unit, notifying the transmitter of the determined transmission rate.

A transmitting device of the present invention comprises an encoder (), a transmitting unit () including a pulse generator () and a parallel-to-serial converter (), a transmitting control unit (), and an antenna (). The pulse generator () comprises a first pulse train generator (), a second pulse train generator (), . . . and an n-th pulse train generator (). A k-bit information bit train is inputted from the information signal source (), The encoder () encodes the k-bit information bit train into an n-bit encoded bit train at a coded rate of (k/n). The pulse generator () generates n-piece repetitive pulse trains corresponding to the n-bit encoded bit train. The antenna () transmits the n-piece repetitive pulse trains as UWB-IR.
