At least one exemplary embodiment is directed to an image display apparatus which displays an image on a surface to be scanned and includes a light source configured to emit a light beam modulated on the basis of image information, a scanner configured to scan the surface to be scanned with the light beam emitted from the light source, a light receiver configured to receive the light beam that is incident upon a particular area of the surface to be scanned when the surface to be scanned is scanned with the light beam, a first determiner configured to determine whether or not an output signal from the light receiver are output at a predetermined time interval, and a controller configured to control driving of the light source on the basis of a determination signal from the determiner.

Disclosed is a displaying optical system including: a scanning member for deflecting a light emitted from a light source; a scanned surface on which an image is formed by the light deflected by the scanning member; an optical surface provided at a position common to a first optical path through which a light reflected by the scanned surface travels and a second optical path through which a light from the scanning member to the scanned surface travels; and a phase plate being provided at the position common to the first optical path and the second optical path. The optical surface, in accordance with a polarization direction, transmits the light traveling through one of the first optical path and the second optical path and reflects the light traveling through the other optical path.

An imaging apparatus including an electronic viewfinder comprising a light source, a scanning unit for scanning light emitted from the light source. The electronic viewfinder forms a two-dimensional image on a predetermined surface by synchronously modulating the light emitted from the light source with the operation of the scanning unit. The imaging apparatus further includes a controller capable of independently controlling the timing of turning on and off the light source and the timing of turning on and off the scanning unit. The controller controls the light source and the scanning unit in response to the on and off state of the power of the imaging apparatus so that when the light source is off the scanning unit is on.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a stereoscopic image displaying method and a stereoscopic image displaying apparatus using the same, which are capable of excellently observing a stereoscopic image. In order to achieve the object, a stereoscopic image forming apparatus of the present invention is configured such that display light from an image corresponding to a viewpoint of one parallax image on an image displaying device, on which parallax images corresponding to a plurality of different viewpoints can be displayed, is guided to an optical modulator, on which a light transmitting section and a light shielding section can be formed, by a second optical system disposed in the front of the image displaying device, and that the display light transmitted through the light transmitting section of the optical modulator is collected at a position that is a predetermined distance apart corresponding to the viewpoint on an observation surface by a first optical system, and the entire screen of a parallax image to be displayed on the image displaying device is thereby caused to be incident on each eye by controlling transmitted light from the optical modulator in synchronism with the switching of parallax images to be displayed on the image displaying device when an observer attains stereoscopic viewing of the image information on the image displaying device.

This invention has as its object to provide a viewpoint detection apparatus and method, which can assure high-speed processing, high precision, and high tracking performance with a simple arrangement while suppressing adverse influences on the human body, and a stereoscopic image display apparatus using the same. The viewpoint position detection apparatus of this invention has an image sensing unit ( ) and a viewpoint detection unit ( ). The image sensing unit has a visible image sensing section ( ) and infrared image sensing section ( ). There is disclosed a mixed reality presentation apparatus which generates and displays a three-dimensional virtual image on a see-through display device so as to allow a plurality of players to play a multi-player game in a mixed reality environment. The apparatus has a CCD camera for detecting the mallet positions of the plurality of players, and a sensor for detecting the view point position of each player in the environment of the multi-player game. The apparatus generates a three-dimensional virtual image that represents a game result of the multi-player game that has progressed in accordance with changes in mallet position detected by the CCD camera and is viewed from the view point position of each player detected by the sensor, and outputs the generated image to the corresponding see-through display device. The apparatus determines the motion of each player by detecting infrared rays output from the corresponding mallet on the basis of an image captured by the CCD camera. The view point position detected by the sensor is corrected by specifying the marker in an image obtained by a camera attached to the head of each player, and comparing the marker position in that image with an actual marker position.
