A method of producing a laminate according to an embodiment of the present invention includes applying an application liquid containing a polyvinyl alcohol-based resin to one side of a resin substrate, followed by drying of the application liquid to form a polyvinyl alcohol-based resin layer. The method includes: passing the application liquid before the application through a depth-type filter having a filtration accuracy of from 50 &#x3bc;m to 100 &#x3bc;m; and fluctuating a pressure applied to the application liquid supplied to the depth-type filter to remove air bubbles in the filter.

A polarizing plate of the present invention includes a polyvinyl alcohol-based polarizer and transparent protective films provided on both sides of the polarizer with an adhesive layer interposed between the polarizer and each transparent protective film, wherein the transparent protective films each comprise a lactone ring structure-containing (meth)acrylic resin, each one of the transparent protective films has a thickness T(&#x3bc;m) of 10 to 35 &#x3bc;m, and the polarizer has a thickness T(&#x3bc;m) which satisfies that the ratio (T/T) of Tto the thickness Tof each one of the transparent protective films falls within the range of 0.8 to 1.8. An end face of a polarization plate cut by laser becomes a substantially flat surface having only sloping micro waviness because of having been melted once to be solidified. Since the surface has few stress-concentrated parts that may cause microcracks, this prevents microcracks from easily being produced.

The present invention provides a method for manufacturing a polarizing film, by which, even when a wide raw film is used, it is possible to obtain a polarizing film that achieves excellent optical characteristics as well as uniformity in in-plane optical characteristics. The method includes the steps of dyeing a polymer film; stretching the dyed film; and drying the film that has undergone the dyeing and stretching steps while conveying the film with rolls. In the drying step, at least two rolls are used as the rolls and the film is dried under a condition that a ratio (R/W) of a distance (R) between the adjacent rolls to an initial width (W) of the polymer film is not less than 0.5 and not more than 4.0.

A polarizing film is provided that prevents display unevenness and can form a liquid crystal display and an electroluminescence display that exhibit excellent display characteristics. The polarizing film is produced in the following manner. That is, a hydrophilic polymer film is conveyed by means of a guide roll so as to be impregnated in an aqueous solvent in a swelling bath and is allowed to swell. In this swelling step, at least a first guide roll is arranged in the swelling bath, and when the polymer film is impregnated in and allowed to travel in the aqueous solvent, the polymer film is brought into contact with the first guide roll within a time up to when swelling reaches a saturation state. Further, the polymer film is dyed using a dichroic substance and stretched.

A method for manufacturing a polarizing plate in which a transparent protective film is provided on at least one surface of a polarizer with an adhesive layer interposed therebetween, wherein an adhesive is coated on a surface of the transparent protective film on which the adhesive layer is formed or/and a surface of the polarizer on which the adhesive layer is formed to form the adhesive layers, and thereafter, an aqueous liquid is caused to be present on an adhering surface when the transparent protective film and the polarizer are continuously adhered to each other with the adhesive layer interposed therebetween. A polarizing plate having uniform polarization characteristics, and excellent in durability is obtained by the method.

An adhesive of the invention for polarizing plates used for forming an adhesive layer in a polarizing plate in which a polarizer and a transparent protective film is are adhering with each other via the adhesive layer, wherein the adhesive for polarizing plates is an aqueous solution containing a polyvinyl alcohol-based resin having an acetoacetyl group and a crosslinking agent, and the aqueous solution has a pH of 4.3 or less. The adhesive of the invention for polarizing plates is good in durability and long in pot life.
