According to one embodiment, multiple first positions are set in a radial direction of a magnetic disk. The multiple first positions include multiple second positions and a third position different from the multiple second positions. A controller of a magnetic disk apparatus executes a first process in which an RRO correction value is measured at each of the multiple second positions and measurement of an RRO correction value at the third position is skipped. After the first process, the controller executes a second process of performing write or read access to multiple tracks. The second process includes acquiring a position error signal by a read head during the write or read access, and calculating an RRO correction value for the third position based on the position error signal.

Magnetic disk apparatus and method

A controller of a magnetic disk device obtains, for each of a plurality of first position sets, a first distribution that is a radial distribution of differences between a target orbit of the magnetic head and an actual position of the magnetic head while correcting a disturbance synchronized with rotation of the magnetic disk by using correction amounts at a plurality of positions included in one of the plurality of first position sets. The controller performs weighting the first distribution according to a position in the radial direction and calculating an evaluation value based on the weighted first distribution for each of the plurality of first position sets. The controller selects a second position set from the plurality of first position sets based on the evaluation value. The controller records correction amounts at a plurality of positions included in the second position set by the magnetic head.

Magnetic disk device and method

According to an embodiment, a controller of a magnetic disk apparatus performs a write operation. In the write operation, the controller performs interpolation using RRO correction values that is obtained by measurement RRO at multiple first positions, and thereby acquires an RRO correction value for performing RRO correction at a position of a target data track. In the write operation, the controller sets WOS on the basis of a write permissible range change determination distance that is a distance between the target data track and one of the multiple first positions that is closest to the target data track.

According to the embodiment, a controller of a magnetic disk apparatus acquires a first amplitude and a first phase of a first read waveform and a second amplitude and a second phase of a second read waveform by demodulating the first/second read waveforms. The first read waveform is a read waveform of a first burst pattern. The second read waveform is a read waveform of a second burst pattern. The controller acquires weights on the basis of the first amplitude, the second amplitude, the first phase, and the second phase. The controller corrects an initial phase of each of the first read waveform and the second read waveform by calculating a weighted average using the weights, the first phase, and the second phase. The controller executes positioning of the magnetic head on the basis of the corrected first read waveform and second read waveform.

According to an embodiment, a magnetic disk is provided with a servo sector in which a preamble and a burst pattern are recorded. A recording frequency of the preamble is different from an even multiple of a recording frequency of the burst pattern. A controller determines a demodulation period of the burst pattern while a magnetic head passes through the servo sector. The controller acquires a first phase of a demodulation signal of the burst pattern and acquires first position information of the magnetic head, by demodulating the burst pattern in the demodulation period. The controller corrects the first position information on the basis of the first phase. The controller executes positioning control of the magnetic head on the basis of second position information that is post-correction first position information.

According to one embodiment, in a magnetic disk, a plurality of first servo sectors is arranged at intervals in the circumferential direction. Each of the plurality of first servo sectors includes a first area and a second area. First information including a preamble, a servo mark, and a Gray code is written in the first area. The second area is disposed after the first area in a write and read direction along the circumferential direction, and second information including a burst pattern is written in the second area. The plurality of first servo sectors includes a plurality of second servo sectors and a plurality of third servo sectors. The circumferential length of a first area included in each of the plurality of third servo sectors is longer than the circumferential length of a first area included in each of the plurality of second servo sectors.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a disk including a zone servo boundary area including a first area of a first servo frequency, a second area of a second servo frequency, and a third area of the first servo frequency, in a servo area, a head, and a controller demodulating first servo data of the first area to derive a position of the head and demodulating first corrected data of the third area to correct the position of the head. The first area, the second area, and the third area are aligned in order in a traveling direction. The first area and the second area are adjacent to each other in a circumferential direction of the disk. The second area and the third area are adjacent to each other in the circumferential direction.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a disk including two first servo sectors and at least a second servo sector, a head, and a controller, wherein the first servo sector includes burst data and a first data pattern written before the circumferential direction of the burst data, the second servo sector includes the burst data, the first data pattern, and a second data pattern written after the circumferential direction of the burst data, a first frequency of the first data pattern is different from a second frequency of the second data pattern, and a first length of the first data pattern is different from a second length of the second data pattern.

According to one embodiment, a magnetic disk device includes a disk having first servo data including a first preamble, a first servo mark, a first gray code, first burst data, and second burst data written after the first burst data, a head including a write head that writes data to the disk and a first read head and a second read head that read data from the disk, and a controller that reads the second burst data using the first read head and the second read head and calculates a servo demodulation position when the first servo data is servo-read without reading the first burst data in a short servo mode in which the first preamble, the first servo mark, and the first gray code are not read.
