A linear-movement potentiometer having an operating rod 25 projecting at both ends from a substantially hermetic casing and connectable at one end 26 to a drive member, and first and second bearings 33, 34 disposed between the casing and the operating rod for supporting the operating rod for a linear sliding motion relative to the casing. A sealing arrangement is provided between the casing and both ends of the operating rod. A sliding variable resistor assembly 38 including a resistor and a contact relatively slidable with each other is disposed within the casing, and one of the resistor and the contact is operatively connected to the operating rod for establishing a relative sliding movement between the resistor and the contact. A cover 54 may be sealingly secured to the casing for covering the end of the operating rod, and the operating rod may have an air passage 28 axially extending therethrough.

Linear-movement potentiometer

The present invention relates to a torque detecting apparatus provided with a conversion device, which is positioned on the axis of one of an input shaft and an output shaft extended on a same axis and mutually connected by a torsion bar and which serves to convert the relative rotational displacement between the input and output shafts into a linear displacement, a slidable member causing a sliding motion corresponding to the linear displacement obtained by the conversion by the conversion device, and detection device for generating an electrical signal by detecting the sliding motion of the slidable member. The conversion device comprises a lever shaft portion, a leg portion and link arrangement. The leg portion oscillates, when the lever shaft portion of conversion device is rotated by the link arrangement, to cause the sliding motion of a slidable member, engaging with the leg portion on the other shaft.

A motor-driven type power assisted steering control apparatus has a torque sensor which is provided with first and second displacement-electric signal converting units and a control unit which is adapted to break a motor current and to interrupt application of a voltage to an electromagnetic clutch as soon as abnormality in the torque sensor is detected on the basis of the electric signals of the first and second displacement-electric signal converting units.

Output signals from first and second speed sensors are inputted in a control unit to measure a car speed on the basis of the signals. When the measured value is higher than a predetermined value, control unit determines that one of the speed sensors is abnormal, whereby a motor current to be fed to a d.c. motor is interrupted and a voltage applied to a magnetic clutch is removed.

Power assist steering gear assembly for vehicle comprises a first unit including an elongated member linearly movable in opposite directions for pivoting of dirigible wheels. The elongated member comprises a rack portion engaged with a pinion connected to a steering shaft and a thread portion cooperating with a ball nut. The power assist steering unit further comprises a separate electric motor unit including an electric motor connected to the ball nut through rotation transmitting means to assist the linear movement of the elongated member.

Power assist steering gear assembly for vehicle comprises an elongated member linearly movable in opposite directions for pivoting of dirigible wheels. The elongated member comprises a rack portion formed at a first axial position and engaged with a pinion connected to a steering shaft and a thread portion formed at a second axial position and cooperating with a ball nut. The power assist steering unit further comprises an electric motor unit coaxially arranged about the elongated member at a third axial position and including an electric motor connected to the ball nut through rotation transmitting means to assist the linear movement of the elongated member.
