A baked flux of high basicity for submerged arc welding which has a chemical composition suitable for use in universal combination with various types of welding wires in welding low alloying steels. The baked flux reduces the oxygen content and diffusible hydrogen content of the weld metal to form a weld metal having a high toughness, enables forming regular beads without causing weld defects such as lack of fusion and slag inclusion, and facilitates welding work. The performance of baked fluxes is described in comparison with that of the conventional baked fluxes.

Baked flux for submerged arc welding

A welding wire for use in submerged arc welding of Cr-Mo steels comprising less than 0.25% C, less than 0.60% Si, 0.15-1.50% Mn, 0.50-10.0% Cr and 0.40-2.50% Mo on the basis of the weight ratio comprises 0.05-0.19% C, less than 0.60% Si, less than 1.6% Mn, 0.50-10.5% Cr and 0.30-2.50% Mo as the basic elements boron and nitrogen added thereto as the essential elements each in the range of 0.0001-0.25% B and 0.010-0.040% N; and at least one of titanium, zirconium and aluminum further incorporated therein each in the range of 0.01-0.30% Ti, 0.05-0.30% Zr and less than 0.40% Al, while being adjusting such that the sum of the elements: Ti+Al+Zr+10B lies within a range between 0.003-0.40% on the basis of the weight ratio. The welding wire of the novel composition can provide weld alloy steels with high strength and excellent toughness even at low temperature.

Welding wire for use in submerged arc welding of Cr-Mo steels

A shielded arc welding electrode containing in a core wire or a covering flux thereof alloy elements in the proportions satisfying the following conditions. ##EQU1## in which B.sub.w is a coefficient of yield in deposited metal of a wire-originating element, B.sub.f is a coefficient of yield in the deposited metal of a flux-originating element, [elementary symbol (%)].sub.w is the percentage by weight of a component element of the core wire to the total weight thereof, [elementary symbol(%)].sub.f is the percentage by weight of a component element of the flux to the total weight thereof, and A.sub.f is the flux ratio (the weight ratio of the applied flux to the total weight of the welding electrode).

Shielded metal arc welding electrode for Cr-Mo low alloy steels

A melting flux composition for submerged arc welding which comprises 6-15% by weight of MgO, 5-10% by weight of CaO, 10-20% by weight of CaF.sub.2, 14-19% by weight of Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 20-25% by weight of TiO.sub.2, 15-20% by weight of SiO.sub.2, and 5-10% by weight of MnO. Optionally, the composition further comprises B.sub.2 O.sub.3 or other oxide components, such as iron oxide and alkali metal oxides.

Melting flux composition for submerged arc welding

A submerged arc welding method and more specifically, a multiple electrode welding method is disclosed wherein welding is performed by arranging electrodes in such a manner that the distance becomes at least 300 mm between a first molten pool formed by multilayer welding or by a single or plural electrodes preceding along the weld line and a subsequent molten pool formed by a single subsequent electrode or plural subsequent electrodes, as well as a submerged arc welding method which is characterized in that there is formed a slag having the components listed below on the weld metal formed by an electrode or a preceding electrode forming a preceding layer, and welding is carried out as such, without removing the slag, using an electrode or a subsequent electrode forming a subsequent layer;

Multiple electrode submerged arc welding method

A method of preventing base metal end cracks in arc welding characterized by the adaptation of an end tab having three protuberant portions on its end contacting the base metal, wherein the protuberant portions at both ends of the end tab are positioned in abutment on the parts of the base metal which are on both sides of the groove line where the welding arc and the weld metal are not directly contacted, while the protuberant portion in the center is positioned on an extension of the groove line, and welding is carried out with the end tab secured to the welding end of the base metal.

Aluminum and aluminum alloys are welded in a horizontal welding position in which the base metals to be welded are vertically disposed in abutting relationship with the welding groove opened sidewise by oscillating the tip of the welding electrode in the widthwise direction of the abutted base metals and welding the base metals while maintaining the angle formed by the surface of the molten pool and the electrode on the advancing side thereof greater than 90.degree.. The surface of the molten pool as used herein is defined as one which is parallel to the crater surface of the weld which results upon termination of welding by extinction of the welding arc.

Process for welding aluminum and aluminum alloys in horizontal welding

A method of vertical welding of aluminum and aluminum alloys comprising welding Al or an Al alloy while oscillating in a welding groove an electrode in a closed pattern corresponding substantially to the groove shape, wherein the welding is conducted by using a welding current higher by 10 to 150 A than the base welding current at least during the course of oscillation of the electrode along the groove face of one of the materials to be welded while the electrode is pursuing courses of oscillation along both groove faces of the materials to be welded.

Method of vertical welding of aluminum and aluminum alloys

The narrow gap butt welding of aluminum and aluminum alloy plates of a thickness more than 20 mm with a non-consumable electrode is conducted by inserting a filling material into a welding groove, applying a direct current of more than 300 A between said non-consumable electrode which does not have a sharp end and said plates to be welded with straight polarity, maintaining an arc length from 0.5 to 5 mm and shielding the welding groove area with a shielding gas comprising at least 50% helium.

Process for narrow gap welding of aluminum alloy thick plates

A flux for use in submerged arc welding of steel, is formed from 10 - 70% iron powder, 10 - 50% MgO, 3 - 25% CaO, 2 - 25% carbonate based on the CO.sub.2 content, 0.03 - 1.5% of a compound or mixture containing boron oxide, the weight being based on the B.sub.2 O.sub.3 content, less than 15% TiO.sub.2, and at least one deoxidizing metallic agent selected from the group consisting of Si, Mn, Al, Ti and alloys thereof.
