A friction member according to an embodiment is a friction material having a copper content of less than 5 wt %, the friction material including a titanic acid salt having a content of 1 wt % or more and 8 wt % or less, a cryolite powder having a content of 0.5 wt % or more and 5 wt % or less, and an iron oxide powder having a median diameter of 15 to 30 μm (D50) and a content of 1 wt % or more and 10 wt % or less.

A friction material which comprises a fibrous base, a binder, a lubricating material, an organic filler, and an inorganic filler, the friction material having a copper element content of 0.5 wt % or less with respect to the whole friction material, wherein the lubricating material comprises graphite having an average particle diameter of 10.0 &#x3bc;m or smaller and the inorganic filler includes barium sulfate, which comprises small-diameter barium sulfate having an average particle diameter of 1.5 &#x3bc;m or smaller and a purity of 95.0% or higher.

Provided is a method of producing a friction material that can prevent occurrence of dust generation and segregation at the time of mixing raw materials of the friction material and that is resistant to deterioration of the friction material even when a phenol resin is employed as a binder and that also allows the production process to be effected safely and speedily and at a low cost. The method includes a mixing step (A) for stirring the raw materials for the friction material containing a high-ortho phenol resin, slaked lime and 3-10 wt. % of water and a forming step (B) for forming a mixture powder obtained from the mixing step (A) to a desired shape at room temperature.

Method of producing friction material

A color image analysis method makes it possible to analyze plural components of a compound individually through formation of an image. Initially, a picture or the image of the compound including the plurality of components is taken by a fluorescence digital image microscope. Then, one or more images of one of the components are extracted or divided from the image of the compound on the basis of color-phase, or color-phase and brightness.

A substrate fiber for a dry friction material includes a trunk portion extending in the axial direction of the fiber and divergent portions slightly diverged from a part of the trunk portion and having small diameters. The diameter of the trunk portion is from about 10 to 20 &mgr;m and the length of the trunk portion is from about 0.5 to 5 mm.
