A light guide includes light guiding members including first and second light guiding members, an optical entrance having a plane on which the light is incident, a light guiding unit to guide the light incident on the optical entrance with repeated reflection, a light beam ejection unit to eject the light to an outside of the light guide, and an extraction unit to reflect the light guided by the light guiding unit toward the light beam ejection unit. The light guiding members guide and eject a light, and the second light guiding member is bonded to, at least, the light guiding unit of the first light guiding member.

The light-guide member includes an incidence portion to receive the image light and an exit portion to emit the image light to an outside, and a reflective portion inclined relative to the incidence portion to guide the image light received by the incidence portion into the light guide. The light-guide member also includes an extraction portion including first planes each inclined relative to the exit portion and second planes each parallel with the exit portion, to guide the image light from each first plane to the exit portion and extract the image light. The optical member includes a parallel plane and an inclined portion.

A semiconductor optical integrated device is a semiconductor optical integrated device in which a first optical element, a monitoring light waveguide and a second optical element, through which light propagates, are formed on a common semiconductor substrate; wherein the monitoring light waveguide is joined to the first optical element, and the second optical element is joined to the monitoring light waveguide. The monitoring light waveguide includes a light scattering portion for scattering a part of the light, which is composed of a combination of light waveguides having different mode field diameters or having different centers of mode field diameters; and a light detector for receiving scattered light scattered by the light scattering portion, is placed on an outer periphery of the monitoring light waveguide, or on a back surface of the semiconductor substrate on its side opposite to that facing the light scattering portion.

A front facet of the semiconductor laser device includes a resonator facet portion containing an end of an active layer, and a protruding portion which protrudes beyond the resonator facet portion in a resonator length direction by a predetermined protrusion amount and has a stepped bottom surface portion. The resonator facet portion and the stepped bottom surface portion are connected to each other to form a corner portion. The distance from a thickness center position of the active layer to the stepped bottom surface portion is defined by a bottom surface portion depth.
