An illumination apparatus includes: a plurality of light emitting modules connected in series; a constant current source; and a fault detection circuit for detecting that the plurality of light emitting modules have at least one thereof with a short circuit fault. The light emitting module includes: an organic EL panel; a threshold value detection circuit configured to output a constant voltage when the organic EL panel between its anode and cathode has a potential difference equal to or larger than a threshold value; and a VI conversion circuit receiving the constant voltage from the threshold value detection circuit, converting the constant voltage into a constant current, and outputting the constant current. The fault detection circuit detects whether the plurality of light emitting modules have a short circuit fault based on a total value of the constant current output from each light emitting module.

A lighting apparatus may include a holding member, a lighting panel, and an attachment bracket for removably attaching the lighting panel to the holding member. The lighting panel may form a first position in which a light-emitting surface of the lighting panel and a light-emitting surface of a lighting panel are located substantially on the same plane with each other and a second position in which the lighting panel is pressed from its light-emitting surface side so that the attachment bracket pivots around a portion where the attachment bracket is attached to the holding member and the lighting panel is inclined with respect to the lighting panel. As the lighting panel forming the second position is moved in a direction away from the holding member the attachment bracket is released from the holding member, and the lighting panel forming the second position is readily removed from the holding member.

This invention is directed to a liquid crystal display apparatus which includes a liquid crystal display element, and a driving device for driving the display element by simple matrix driving. The display element includes a liquid crystal layer exhibiting a cholesteric phase, and has scanning electrodes and signal electrodes. The driving device is configured such that a driving voltage of single polarity including a selection signal voltage is applied to the scanning electrodes in each frame, and the polarity of the driving voltage is reversed in every frame. The selection signal voltage is successively applied to each scanning electrode in a scanning period set for the scanning electrode, while a rewriting signal voltage corresponding to each scanning electrode in the selected state is applied to each signal electrode. An application period of the selection signal voltage to the scanning electrode is &#xbd; the scanning period.

Liquid crystal display apparatus

A liquid crystal display device which carries out matrix driving of a liquid crystal layer by applying AC pulses to the liquid crystal layer through a plurality of scan electrodes and a plurality of data electrodes which face and cross each other. Disclosed herein is a liquid crystal display apparatus comprising: a liquid crystal display element composed of a liquid crystal layer and having a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix pattern; and a driver for dividing one frame into plural fields and interlace-scanning the plurality of fields. In one embodiment, the driver is so structured to drive the respective fields composing one frame so that a scanning order of the fields is discontinued at least once. In another embodiment, the driver is so structured to drive scanning lines by means of a driving waveform having a reset period for resetting a state of liquid crystals, a selection period for selecting a final display state of the liquid crystals, and a maintaining period for establishing the state selected at the selection period, and starts scanning of next field based on reset period end timing of one scanning line of the previous field.

Disclosed herewith is a matrix driving method of liquid crystal which exhibits a cholesteric phase. In the method, there is a selection pulse application step of applying pulses to select the final state of the liquid crystal, and between the selection pulse application step of a scanning line and the selection pulse application step of the next scanned scanning line, a delay step is inserted. During the delay step, a signal pulse is of 0V or of a pulse voltage for a display of a specified density.

Liquid crystal display driving method and liquid crystal display apparatus

A display device which has a liquid crystal display which has a plurality liquid crystal pixels arranged in a matrix and which writes an image thereon after resetting the liquid crystal. The method of writing on the liquid crystal display can be selected from driving methods according to interlace scanning in which a frame is divided into a plurality of fields and writing by interlace scanning is performed and driving methods according to sequential scanning in which scanning lines are subjected to writing serially. When high-speed writing is required, for example, when display of a motion picture, display of inputted letters or scroll display is desired, one of the driving methods according to interlace scanning is selected. In interlace scanning, based on the end of a blackout state of a scanning line in a field, selection of a scanning line in the next field for writing is started. Writing on a scanning line comprises a reset step of resetting the liquid crystal, a selection step of selecting the final state of the liquid crystal, an evolution step of stabling the liquid crystal into the selected state, and one of the length of the reset step and the total length of the selection step and the evolution step is n times (n: natural number) the other. For example, when the length of the reset step is n times the total length of the selection step and the evolution step and when a frame is divided into m fields (m: natural number larger than n) for interlace scanning, there is a moment when, in serial m scanning lines, n scanning lines of them are in the reset step, one of them is in the selection step or in the evolution step, and the other m&#x2212;n&#x2212;1 scanning lines are in a display step.
