An outboard motor having an fuel/air injection system wherein all of the major components of the fuel portion of the fuel/air injection system are contained within a sealed chamber having a fuel drain and the conduits that supply fuel to the fuel injectors are also contained within fuel collecting conduits so that any fuel leaking will not escape back to the atmosphere. In addition, the air pressure supplied to the fuel/air injectors is regulated and the air relieved for pressure regulation is returned to an air inlet device having a baffle for condensing any fuel in the regulated air and returning the condensed fuel to a vapor separator. The engine is of the V type and major components of the fuel/air injection system are positioned in the valley between the cylinder banks.

Two embodiments of jet propelled watercraft having improved electrically powered trim adjustments. In one embodiment, the trim adjustment effects pivotal movement of the discharge nozzle of the jet propulsion unit and in the other embodiment the electric power operates a trim plate of the hull that extends beneath the jet propulsion unit.

Water injection propulsion device

Several embodiments of jet propulsion drive units for watercraft wherein the engine outer housing is provided with an integral step down transmission so that the engine can be a high speed, low displacement engine and still drive the jet propulsion unit without causing cavitation. In one embodiment, the transmission is constructed so as to permit the impeller shaft to be positioned in offset relationship to the engine output shaft and in the other embodiment, the shafts are in line with each other.

A high pressure fuel/air injection system for an outboard motor having a V-cylinder arrangement wherein the major components of the air/fuel supply system are disposed in the valley between the cylinder banks. The system includes an vapor fuel separator that has a fuel chamber in which the supply of fuel is maintained by a float valve and an air chamber positioned above the fuel chamber and to one side of it and which communicates with the fuel chamber through a perforated member. A filter media fills the air chamber and an atmospheric air inlet is provided to the air chamber. Fuel pressure and fuel regulator valves are disposed in the area to the side of the air chamber and regulate fuel and air pressure by dumping fuel and air back to the fuel and air chambers, respectively, through integral internal conduits. The regulating system includes an arrangement for regulating the fuel pressure so that it will be at least greater than the air pressure by a predetermined amount and also for precluding the delivery of air under pressure if fuel under pressure is not supplied. The arrangement also incorporates a system for insuring that fuel cannot flow out of the atmospheric air inlet if the outboard motor is tilted up or is laid on its sides. An additional air supply is provided for the air compressor in the event the air chamber becomes clogged or inadequate to supply the air requirements for the system.

A fuel injection system for an in-line multi-cylinder internal combustion engine that comprises a injector rail, a fuel supplying unit for delivering fuel to the injector rail and which includes a high pressure fuel pump, a pressure regulator and a vapor separator installed as a unit on the same side of the engine as the exhaust ports for the cylinders. The fuel injection system further comprises an air compressor for delivering air to the injector rail and which is installed as a unit with a generator on the side of the engine opposite the fuel supplying unit. The compressor is positioned above the generator which has a larger diameter than the compressor, and these two components are provided with a common drive shaft that is drivingly connected to the crankshaft of the engine for rotation.

Auxiliary structure and arrangement for internal combustion engine

A number of embodiments of seal arrangement for sealing between the cowling and tray of the powerhead of an outboard motor. In each embodiment, the seal includes a base portion, a seal portion and an intermediate portion that deflects by bending for achieving sealing action without necessitating any compression of the material in the seal. As a result, significantly lower sealing pressures can be employed.

A cowling arrangement for an outboard motor including an improved air induction system including a cavity formed at the rear end of the main cowling portion and having at least three vertically upstanding ducts for delivering air to the interior of the main cowling and the engine for its operation. The ducts are arranged in such a manner as to improve water separation and prevent the ingestion of water into the engine.

A cowling arrangement and fitting structure for an outboard motor is provided for positioning a top cover of the cowling onto a cowling tray member. Column shaped bosses are preferably integrally formed on the inner wall of the top cover and are adapted for engagement with corresponding positioning bosses preferably integrally formed on the inner wall of the tray member. This fitting structure produces a flush and accurate fit between the adjoining surfaces of the top cover and tray.

Cowling arrangement for outboard motor

In an apparatus for fixing a cowling assembly of an outboard motor, a base member is provided with a locking plate and an intermediate plate. The locking plate has a jaw portion and a stay-receiving face for clamping a stay when the cowling assembly is locked. The intermediate plate has a first stopper portion, a second stopper portion and a cam-receiving portion, In the locked state of the cowling assembly, the first stopper portion is engaged with the locking plate. In the released state of the cowling assembly, the second stopper is engaged with the locking plate. The intermediate plate is moved in a direction to release the cowling assembly, by means of an operation lever arranged at a front portion of a bottom cowling. A spring interposed, in its compressed form, between a spring seat of the locking plate and a spring seat of the intermediate plate urges the locking plate and the intermediate plate to rotate in such a direction as to engage the locking plate with the stopper portions. The operating lever is connected to an intermediate plate of a rear locking mechanism.
