A method and apparatus for digital signal transmission, in which data of plural media is transmitted and received over a communication transmission channel. A digital signal format for the transmitted digital signal has an ancillary data section ANC within which there are a plurality of channels for audio signals, each channel including a leading line number area LN, a type area TP, a byte count area BC, an error correction code ECC and a data area DT. The digital signal format also has a payload section PAD within which there are a plurality of channels for video signals, or the like. Each channel includes a type area TP, a byte count area BC, an error correction code ECC and a data area DT.

Digital serial data interface

In a transmission device, an image signal and an audio signal are played back at a speed n times normal speed from a recording medium and the played back image signal is encoded. The played back audio signal is sampled using a sampling clock signal of a sampling frequency which is proportional to the speed n times normal speed. When n&gt;1, 1/n items of sampling data of the sampling data generated by sampling is encoded. When n&lt;1, all of the sampling data generated by sampling is encoded. The encoded image signal and encoded audio signal are then transmitted to a terminal device.

In a two-way communication system having first and second communication terminals, a telephone apparatus at each terminal for two-way telephone service and a picture communication apparatus at each terminal for providing users with visual images of each other; the picture communication apparatus includes video cameras for generating video signals to be transmitted, display apparatus for displaying the visual images, a control apparatus for controlling transmission and reception of the video signals, and a line drawing input apparatus connected to the control apparatus for generating a line signal representing the line drawing and which is transmitted with the video signals from the control apparatus.
