A silver halide photosensitive material containing a compound selected from Types 1-4 below which is capable of undergoing a one-electron oxidation to form a one-electron oxidation product (OEOP), and a reducing compound (Type 1) the OEOP is capable of releasing further two or more electrons accompanying a subsequent bond cleavage reaction, (Type 2) the OEOP is capable of releasing further one electron accompanying a subsequent bond cleavage reaction, and the compound having, in its molecule, two or more groups adsorptive to silver halide, (Type 3) the OEOP is capable of releasing further one or more electrons after going through a subsequent bond forming process, and (Type 4) the OEOP is capable of releasing further one or more electrons after going through a subsequent intramolecular ring cleavage reaction.

The invention provides a photothermographic material comprising a photosensitive silver halide, an organic silver salt, a reducing agent, and a binder on a support. A layer containing the organic silver salt has been formed by using a solid particle dispersion of the organic silver salt and a polymer latex as a main binder, preparing a coating solution of the salt and the binder in an aqueous solvent, and coating the solution, followed by drying. Coating operation is easy, and coating surface quality and photographic properties are improved.

Photothermographic material

A photothermographic material contains an organic silver salt, a photosensitive silver halide, a reducing agent, a binder, and a compound of the formula: X--L.sub.1 --D wherein D is an electron donative group of atoms, X is an adsorption promoting group to silver halide, and L.sub.1 is a valence bond or a linking group. It has high sensitivity in the red to infrared region and experiences a minimal change of photographic properties under different developing conditions.

Photothermographic materials

A photothermographic material contains a compound of formula (I): ##STR1## wherein X represents --N.dbd., --N(R)--, --O--or --S--wherein R represents hydrogen, hydroxy, aliphatic hydrocarbon, aryl or heterocyclic group, Z represents a valence bond or a group of non-metallic atoms necessary to form a 5 to 7-membered ring with X, and each of Q.sub.1 and Q.sub.2 represents a group of non-metallic atoms necessary to form an aromatic hydrocarbon ring or aromatic heterocycle fused to the ring completed by Z. The material has high sensitivity in the infrared region and a minimal sensitivity change with varying storage conditions.

The present invention provides novel indolylazaphthalides represented by formula (I) described below. The indolylazaphthalides are useful as electron donative colorless dyes for preparing recording materials. Recording materials containing the novel indolylazaphthalides of formula (I) as electron donative colorless dyes provide images having blue to cyan colors at an excellent density, while suppressing light coloration in non-image areas. ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 represents a divalent linkage group such as an alkylene group, cycloalkylene group, aralkylene group, or a phenylene group, which linkage group is linked to a bimolecular indolylazaphthalide compound to form a bis-type structure.

Indolylazaphthalides and recording materials containing the same
