A collecting exhaust port provided in a cylinder head is comprised of exhaust port sections extending from exhaust valve bores in cylinders , and an exhaust collecting section in which the exhaust port sections are collected. The cylinder head includes a protrusion projecting in an arch shape outside a side wall of a cylinder block . The exhaust collecting section of the collecting exhaust port directly faces an inner surface of a side wall of the protrusion . Water jackets J and J for cooling the protrusion are provided in upper and lower surfaces of the protrusion having the collecting exhaust port defined therein. The water jackets J and J are not provided between the side wall of the protrusion and the exhaust collecting section . Thus, the compact cylinder head having the collecting exhaust port integrally provided therein can be formed, while avoiding the complication of the structure of a core.

A system for controlling an ignition timing of an internal combustion engine, in which an ignition timing advancing correction amount is determined based on at least the detected engine coolant temperature, and it is determined whether the engine is under a predetermined cold starting condition. When the result is affirmative, the ignition timing is advanced beyond the MBT. This arrangement is based on the inventors finding that the gas temperature rises at the combustion stroke, but drops little after the expansion stroke. With this, the increased fuel amount for compensating the engine output loss caused by ignition timing advancement can effectively be utilized to heat the engine coolant, thereby facilitating and improving the engine warm-up.
