A regulator and a DC/DC converter are provided in which a soft start is carried out even when an output is short-circuited by abnormality. Regulator includes soft start circuit that gradually starts up a reference voltage that is input into error amplifier from 0 V to the reference voltage and soft start reset circuit that monitors an input of error amplifier and performs soft start of soft start circuit again when an output of output terminal Vo is short-circuited. Soft start reset circuit includes comparator that is disposed in parallel with an input of error amplifier, offset voltage that gives an offset to the input of comparator, and NPN transistor that is turned on or off in accordance with a result of comparison of comparator and discharges capacitor C by being turned on when the output is short-circuited.

Acridinium compounds and their conjugates exhibiting high chemiluminescence yield are provided. Such compounds may be used to enable a highly sensitive specific binding assay. The acridinium compounds are represented by formula (I): ##STR1## wherein A is a linker; Z is a binding group; Y is a counter ion; R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are independently a substituent; p and m are independently an integer of from 0 to 4; n is an integer of from 2 to 5; and X is an organic intervening moiety with a functionality of at least n, having an aryloxy group or an arylsulfonamide group through which X binds to carbonyl carbon bonded to 9-position of the acridinium ring.

The invention provides an assay by which detection and/or quantitation of adenyl group-containing substances can be performed simply, with high sensitivity and high signal-to-noise ratio. In particular, the method provides an assay in which the chemiluminescence of a chemiluminescent substance, made by reacting a glyoxal derivative with an adenyl group in the substance to be detected/quantitated in the presence of a heteropolyacid or a heteropolyacid salt, is measured.

Acridinium compounds represented by the general formula (I) where A is an intervening group which does not have activity for binding with a specific binding substance, Z is a labelling active group which has activity for binding with a specific binding substance, R.sup.1 is a halogen atom, an alkyl group or an aryl group; R.sup.2, R.sup.3, R.sup.4 and R.sup.5 are each a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, an alkoxy group, a nitro group, a halogen atom or a carbonyl group, and Y is a counter ion. The acridinium compounds may form conjugates with specific binding substances. The acridinium compounds have high emission efficiency and stability and, hence, are useful as chemiluminescence labelling agents.
