In an active-matrix liquid crystal display device, each of multiple pixels includes a first sub-pixel and a second sub-pixel, through which different voltages are applicable to a portion of the liquid crystal layer. Each of the first and second sub-pixels includes a liquid crystal capacitor defined by a counter electrode and a sub-pixel electrode that faces the counter electrode by way of the liquid crystal layer, and a storage capacitor defined by a storage capacitor electrode, an insulating layer, and a storage capacitor counter electrode. The storage capacitor electrode is electrically connected to the sub-pixel electrode, and the storage capacitor counter electrode faces the storage capacitor electrode by way of the insulating layer. The counter electrode is shared by the first and second sub-pixels and the storage capacitor counter electrodes of the first and second sub-pixels are electrically independent of each other.

Liquid crystal display device

An active element substrate and an opposed substrate sandwich a liquid crystal layer to constitute a liquid crystal display device. On the active element substrate, two signal lines respectively charge a pair of pixels that are adjacent to each other in a direction parallel to scanning lines. The two signal lines are provided intensively on a pixel electrode of one of the pair of pixels. In the direction parallel to the scanning lines, a pixel electrode on which signal lines are provided, and a pixel electrode on which signal lines are not provided, are arrayed alternately. This arrangement makes it possible to reduce, while ensuring a wide process margin, the fluctuation of the potential of a terminal to be connected to a pixel electrode (the fluctuation of the potential occurs during OFF-period of an active element due to capacitances respectively provided at superimposed portions of signal lines and a pixel electrode), to simplify the arrangement of signal lines, and to improve the aperture ratio.

An active-matrix substrate includes first and second trunk lines which are arranged so as to be spaced apart from, but adjacent to, each other and are supplied with signals electrically independently. First and second groups of lines include portions that are substantially parallel to each other. A first group of connecting pads for the first trunk line is located near the second trunk line such that each line of the first group is electrically connected to the first trunk line at an associated one of the connecting pads belonging to the first group near the second trunk line. A second group of connecting pads for the second trunk line is provided near the first trunk line such that each line of the second group is electrically connected to the second trunk line at an associated one of the connecting pads of the second group near the first trunk line.

Active-matrix substrate and display device

A liquid crystal display apparatus is produced by the steps of arranging pixel electrodes, TFT devices and signal wiring on one surface of one substrate, arranging a transparent layer on a portion of one surface of a transparent substrate which portion is to be a display portion, bonding the one substrate and the transparent substrate to each other while the one surface having the pixel electrodes formed thereon faces the one surface having the transparent layer formed thereon, and injecting a liquid crystal between the substrates to form a liquid crystal layer. A fluidization path of the liquid crystal can be secured in a non-display portion, too, in which the TFT devices and the signal wiring are disposed when the liquid crystal is injected. Therefore, it is possible to shorten the injection time by increasing the liquid crystal injection speed and to improve productivity.

Liquid crystal display apparatus and production method thereof

On a termination side of each scanning line is provided a charging switching element and a discharging switching element in parallel with each other, the charging switching element having a gate electrode which is connected with one end of a scanning auxiliary line, the other end of which is connected to a scanning line of the same stage, the discharging switching element having a gate electrode which is connected with one end of a scanning auxiliary line, the other end of which is connected to a scanning line of the following stage. Further, the charging switching element has a source/drain electrode which is connected to a scanning line and a selected state scanning driving voltage power source, whereas the discharging switching element has a source/drain electrode which is connected to a scanning line and the non-selected state scanning driving voltage power source, thereby allowing an image display device of the present invention to suppress the dull waveform of a driving voltage at both rise and fall, and prevent erroneous writing without reducing effective writing time.

A liquid crystal display including an active matrix substrate furnished with a matrix of TFTs, in which a plurality of TAB substrates each having a driver IC are connected to the active matrix substrate through an ACF, and the driver ICs are connected to source bus lines through the ACF. Also, adjacent driver ICs disposed on the mounting substrates are connected to each other through common connection lines formed on the active matrix substrate. Consequently, the size and weight of the mounting substrates used to provide the driver ICs and lines connected to the same can be reduced, thereby making it possible to provide a light and inexpensive liquid crystal display having a small frame edge portion.

The transmission type liquid crystal display device of this invention includes: gate lines; source lines; and switching elements each arranged near a crossing of each gate line and each source line, a gate electrode of each switching element being connected to the gate line, a source electrode of the switching element being connected to the source line, and a drain electrode of the switching element being connected to a pixel electrode for applying a voltage to a liquid crystal layer, wherein an interlayer insulating film formed of an, organic film with high transparency is provided above the switching element, the gate line, and the source line, and wherein the pixel electrode formed of a transparent conductive film is provided on the interlayer insulating film.

The transmission type liquid crystal display device of this invention includes: gate lines; source lines; and switching elements each arranged near a crossing of each gate line and each source line, a gate electrode of each switching element being connected to the gate line, a source electrode of the switching element being connected to the source line, and a drain electrode of the switching element being connected to a pixel electrode for applying a voltage to a liquid crystal layer, wherein an interlayer insulating film formed of an organic film with high transparency is provided above the switching element, the gate line, and the source line, and wherein the pixel electrode formed of a transparent conductive film is provided on the interlayer insulating film.

A liquid crystal display device includes a substrate having formed thereon pixel electrodes, a counter substrate placed so as to face the substrate, a seal material for bonding the substrate and the counter substrate together so as to seal a liquid crystal in a spacing formed between them, and a protective circuit formed on the substrate so as to connect adjacent scanning lines and/or signal lines, wherein the protective circuit is located inside an outer edge of a bonding region on the substrate where the seal material is applied. In an alternate embodiment, the protective circuit is located inside the inner perimeter of a region where the seal material is applied. A third embodiment employs a bifurcated insulating film layer having at least two separate sections. A first section covers the protective circuit and a second section partially covers the input terminals of the signal and scanning lines. These arrangements permit a stripping-off of the insulating film layer without exposing the protective circuit to air.

An active matrix substrate provided with a dielectric substrate, on which a gate wire multi-short-circuit group composed of gate wire multi-short-circuit wires and a data wire multi-short-circuit group composed of gate wire multi-short-circuit wires are formed at either ends of the gate wires and data wires, respectively. The gate wires and gate wire multi-short-circuit wires are connected in such a manner that adjacent gate wires are short-circuited with different gate wire multi-short-circuit wires. It has become possible with the present active matrix substrate to conduct electrical inspections such that can detect leakage defects among the gate wires and those among the data wires, correct the revealed defects, and confirm the corrections easier at a low cost. Moreover, the present active matrix substrate can prevent static electricity in a sufficient manner.
