Embodiments herein process a plurality of jobs through a document handler (the jobs comprise one or more media sheets), scan the media sheets as the media sheets pass through the document handler and pass by a scanner, and maintain statistics of registration of the media sheets with respect to the scanner over time (hours or days). The method compares the statistics with a predetermined registration range and provides a notification of a scanner re-registration requirement when the statistics are outside the predetermined range.

A diagnostic system made part of or for use with a document handling device in which a customer is guided toward performance of at least one comparison means in a diagnostic routine analysis. The comparison means is selected from a group comprising (1) a first comparison comparing a fused print media and an unfused print media for presence of a defect, (2) a second comparison comparing an output print media and at least one image on a screen for a type of defect, and (3) a third comparison comparing a low-charged print media and a no-charged print media for qualities of the defect. The customer enters a selection based on results of the first, the second, or the third comparisons. The diagnostic system can identify a part causing a defect in the print media based on results of the comparisons.

Customer part replacement feature utilizing high frequency service interval fault and signature analyses

An original comprises a first page and a second page as disposed face-down on the platen surface of an image-processing device. The platen is scanned to form a platen image. The positions of two diagonally-opposite corners of the original are determined based on a fixed platen reference point. An original image is formed by cropping the platen image based on the positions of the two original corners. The size and position of either one selected page or both pages are determined based on the two original corner positions. When the image of only one selected page is desired, the image of the selected page is formed by cropping the original image based on the size and position of the selected page. When the images of both pages are desired, the images of both pages are formed by cropping the original image based on the sizes and positions of both pages.

Scanning method and an image-processing device including the same

Embodiments herein begin by sensing first document presence data of a media sheet in a media path using a scanner. Then, the embodiments calculate a background correction factor for scanning the media sheet based on input from the scanner. Second document presence data is obtained from this background correction factor. If the second document presence data indicates that no media sheet is present (which is contrary to the first document presence data), there is a possibility that the first document presence data was false. In order to check if the first document presence data is false, the embodiments obtain third document presence data relating to alignment of the media sheet within the media path, again using the scanner. If the third document presence data also determines that no media sheet is present, this indicates that the media path is in need of cleaning. In other words, if the first document presence data indicates that the media sheet is present, but the second document presence data and third document presence data both indicate that no media sheet is present, the embodiments provides a notification that the media path needs cleaning.

Document scanner dust detection systems and methods

A document size identification module receives a single scan of a document and detects for at least one of a black to white transition and a white to black transition. The black to white transition may represent a transition from an overscan area of a platen to a document. The white to black transition may represent a transition from the document to the overscan area of the platen. By detecting at least one of the black to white transition and the white to black transition, the document width may be determined. By determining the document width, the document size may be identified.

Method and apparatus for identifying document size

A system electronically registers an image on an input document. The system includes a scanner for generating an image data stream representing an electronic image of the image on the input document and an edge detecting circuit for detecting edge data within the image data stream. A circuit detects a first corner of a leading edge of the input document based on the detected edge data and for establishing a first coordinate value therefrom and a second corner of a leading edge of the input document based on the detected edge data and for establishing a second coordinate value therefrom. The system further determines a minimum and maximum location for a leading edge of the scanned document and determines a minimum and maximum location for a trailing edge of the scanned document. An image window is generated representing valid image data to processed and rendered based on the minimum and maximum location for a leading edge of the scanned document, the minimum and maximum location for a trailing edge of the scanned document, the first coordinate value, and the second coordinate value.

Electronic image registration for a scanner

An image processing apparatus and method include a plurality of different background suppression data acquisition modes selectable by a user in order to obtain background suppression data from a document being reproduced. The obtained background suppression data is used by an image processing unit to suppress the background region of the document being reproduced. The user is able to select one of the plurality of background suppression data acquisition modes depending upon the user's desire for high speed document reproduction versus the required quality of background suppression. In this manner, the user is able to determine whether document reproduction speed or background suppression quality is to be emphasized. The user's choice of a background suppression data acquisition mode is selectively overridden if the image processing apparatus determines that a more performance-intensive background suppression data acquisition mode may be implemented to improve background suppression quality without an associated loss of document reproduction speed.

Method and apparatus for digital image processing with selectable background suppression data acquisition modes

A system electronically registers an image on an input document. The system includes a scanner for generating an image data stream representing an electronic image of the image on the input document and an edge detecting circuit for detecting edge data within the image data stream. A circuit calculates a skew angle of the input document based on the detected edge data and rotates the electronic image based on the calculated skew angle to register the electronic image with an output medium. The system also includes a non-image area generating circuit for generating areas in the electronic image which correspond to non-image areas based on the calculated skew and detected edge data. The skew calculation, rotation operation and the non-image area generation is based the electronic detection of the corners and center of the leading edge of the document being scanned.
