An improved vapor compression refrigeration system that has an indicator for detecting the presence of acid contamination in the refrigerant contained in the system. The indicator is permanently or semipermanently installed so that continuous monitoring of the refrigerant for acid is possible. The indicator is located in a portion of the system where the refrigerant is always in a gaseous state. In a preferred embodiment, the indicator is located in a bypass line between the suction and the discharge of the system compressor. The indicator preferably shows the presence of acid by a color change, visible from a point external to the indicator, in an indicator bed in the indicator. The color change may be either permanent or the indicator bed may return to its original color when the acid contamination is no longer present in the refrigerant.

An infrared burner with an extremely low pressure drop is described. The burner comprises a corrosion resistant mesh screen having a thick porous coating of ceramic fibers deposited thereon. In addition to a low pressure drop the burner has structural integrity and ability to generate energy at a high rate. The burner is produced by admixing ceramic fibers with a polymeric material which burns off upon heating.

The burner is produced by admixing ceramic fibers with a polymeric material which burns off upon heating.

A low pressure refrigerant specimen is metered from a refrigeration system as a two phase mixture containing both a liquid phase and a gas phase. The mixture is sealed in an inflatable bag and the liquid phase is permitted to become a gas at atmospheric pressure whereby any contaminants in the sample are uniformly distributed throughout the sample. A small representative sample of the gas is drawn from the bag by a pump and the sample passed through a contaminant tester tube which provides a visual indication of the amount of one or more selected contaminants contained in the representative sample.
