Mechanisms are provided to implement an annotation mechanism allows users to annotate documents with annotations for processing by a cognitive medical system. The annotation mechanism receives, via a user interface, a user selection of an electronic document for annotation, and determines one or more domains associated with the selected electronic document from an analysis of metadata associated with the selected electronic document. The annotation mechanism retrieves a predefined set of annotations associated with each determined domain, and presents the predefined set of annotations as user selectable elements. The annotation mechanism receives, via the user interface, a selection of one or more annotations in the predefined set of annotations to be associated with the selected portion of the selected electronic document, and generates annotation metadata associating the selected portion using the selected one or more annotations. The annotation mechanism then generates an annotated electronic document using the annotated metadata.

A digital differential line receiver includes a differential signal to single-ended conversion amplifier coupled to receive a data line and data-complement line of a differential signal; a first termination resistor coupled to the data line of the differential signal; a second termination resistor coupled to the data-complement line of the differential signal; a first impedance-adjusting transistor coupled between the first termination resistor and a common mode line; a second impedance-adjusting transistor coupled between the second termination resistor and the common mode line; a control-voltage generator coupled to sense the common mode line and provide a control voltage, the control voltage generator configured to adjust the control voltage to a voltage level such that a combined impedance of the first termination resistor, the first impedance-adjusting transistor, the second termination resistor, and the second impedance-adjusting transistor matches a specified impedance.

Disclosed herein are sliders having air-bearing surface (ABS) designs to mitigate the effects of smear on near-field transducers used in data storage devices, and data storage devices comprising such sliders. A slider comprises a leading edge, a trailing edge, a NFT, and an ABS with features to increase oxygen concentration near the NFT. The ABS comprises a channel configured to direct gas in a direction from the leading edge toward the trailing edge and a funnel region connected to the channel, disposed between the channel and the NFT, and configured to receive gas from the channel. In an ABS view of the slider, a width of the funnel region along a longitudinal axis passing through the NFT monotonically increases with distance from the NFT.

Slider gas-bearing surface designs to mitigate effects of smear in heat-assisted magnetic recording

Disclosed are sliders for data storage devices, and data storage devices incorporating such sliders. A slider comprises a leading edge and an air-bearing surface (ABS). The ABS comprises a trailing end comprising a trailing pad, and a plurality of channels configured to direct gas in a direction from the leading edge toward the trailing end, wherein each of the plurality of channels is connected to the trailing end. The plurality of channels may include a center channel, an inner-diameter channel, and/or an outer-diameter channel. The disclosed sliders may be particularly advantageous for lower-pressure operating environments, such as sealed-helium disk drives.

A microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device includes a substrate and at least one MEMS unit disposed on the substrate. The MEMS unit includes at least one first electrode, at least one second electrode, at least one landing element, and a hinge layer. The first electrode is disposed on the substrate. The second electrode is disposed on the substrate. The landing element is disposed on the substrate. The hinge layer includes a hinge portion and at least one cantilever portion. The hinge portion is connected to the second electrode. The cantilever portion is connected to the hinge portion. The cantilever portion has a first opening and at least one spring disposed in the first opening and connected to at least one side of the first opening. When a voltage difference exists between the first electrode and the second electrode, the hinge portion is distorted and the spring thus touches the landing element.
