This invention effectively smoothens the steel sheet surface after final cold rolling by removing oxidation scale produced on the steel sheet surface in the production steps of grain oriented silicon steel sheets, particularly after intermediate annealing and at a stage before the final cold rolling, or further forming grooves onto the steel sheet surface along the rolling direction, and hence can utilize high speed tandem rolling for the final cold rolling, whereby the production of grain oriented silicon steel sheets having excellent magnetic properties is realized in a high productivity.

A roll rearranging apparatus is so constructed that an upper roll unit of a tension leveler can be taken in and out together with a lower roll group from a housing. In order to greatly reduce the rearranging time and improve the production efficiency by reduction of labor and the safety of work, the apparatus comprises an arm which is provided at a work side end of a roll support supporting a roll unit, the arm including a hole at a lower side thereof, and an engagement capable of being engaged with the hole of the arm and including a moving up and down mechanism.

A welding apparatus for butt weld joint of steel plates such as steel strips is assembled together with a grinding device, which is combined in one system. The grinding device is so arranged that grinding wheels of this system can be moved along the welded joint following just after the welding torch. The clamping dies for clamping the welding portion of the steel plates are divided sectionally provided with mechanisms for shifting the respective divided clamping dies between a first clamping position during welding and a second clamping position during grinding. The upper unit of the grinding device can be moved along a rail assembly for guiding the welding torch. The lower unit of the grinding device can be moved along a rail assembly for guiding the shearing machine.

An apparatus in which a metal strip is passed in contact partly around the outer circumferences of a number of spaced cooling rolls through which coolant passes. The apparatus includes temperature detectors for detecting the temperature of the strip before contact with each of the cooling rolls, and coolant temperature regulators controlled in accordance with the detected temperature of the strip to adjust the temperature of the coolant passing through each cooling roll to a range which limits the temperature drop of the strip such that unacceptable irregularities or distortions in the configuration of the strip cannot occur. The coolant used for each cooling roll is selected with a boiling point appropriate to the respective detected temperature for each roll. In the preferred arrangement, further temperature detectors are provided for each cooling roll to detect the temperature of the coolant, and output signals from both detectors are inputted to a control for regulating a flow rate valve.
