Systems and methods are provided for adjusting gain of a receiver. Adaptation circuitry is operable to identify, based on a matrix representation of a receiver's output generated from horizontal and vertical sweeps of the receiver's output, an eye opening of the receiver's output. The adaptation circuitry is also operable to determine whether a size of the eye opening needs to be changed. When it is determined that the size of the eye opening needs to be changed, the adaptation circuitry is operable to generate a digital signal to change a gain setting of the receiver. When the signal at the receiver's output is under-equalized, the AC gain of the receiver is increased. When the signal at the receiver's output is over-equalized, the AC gain of the receiver is decreased.

A system and method for authentication of a communication device is disclosed. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a communication device having a controller element to compute a shared secret key based at least in part on a communication device private key and a cryptography algorithm, where the communication device private key is stored in an identity module of the communication device and is unknown to an authentication center, and wherein the communication device is authenticated by the authentication center based at least in part on the shared secret key. A method and apparatus for managing a network is disclosed. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a network device having a controller element to modify a communication parameter of the network device based on a policy of the communication system, wherein the policy is generated based at least in part on a client request to modify the communication system and a policy template retrieved according to a policy identification communicated over the Internet by an operations support system. A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a server having a controller to implement an Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) cryptosystem and manage a key exchange, authentication, and certificate exchange with a communication device also implementing the ECDH cryptosystem, wherein the server communicates over a network that provides an encrypted communication link for the communication device.
