A process for the preparation of a latex polymer consistent with E/A (emulsion/aggregation/coalescence) toner manufacture. The process utilizes a standard (universal) latex composition and involves chain-transfer agent partitioning, emulsion polymerization that provides a latex polymer with a wide range of molecular properties. In particular, the process customizes a wide range M (weight average molecular weight) latex, without substantially varying the M (number average molecular weight) and hence, without substantially varying Tg (glass transition temperature) such that good toner performance is maintained. In a preferred process, a latex polymer is prepared by mixing a seed particle latex, generated by aqueous emulsion polymerization of a first portion of a monomer emulsion, with a second portion of the monomer emulsion and at least one chain-transfer agent. The mixing is done in the presence of a free-radical initiator and heated, and wherein the monomer emulsion comprises a mixture of polymerization reagents of at least one monomer, at least one chain-transfer agent, at least one surfactant, and water. This process may be applied to core-shell polymerization as well. These latex polymers are ideally suited in the manufacture of toner and developer for electrophotographic imaging and printing.

There is disclosed a viscosity reduction method including: (a) forming an azeotropic mixture including water and a liquid capable of forming the azeotropic mixture with the water in a coating composition comprised of the water, a solvent, and a polymeric material selected from the group consisting of a fluorohydrocarbon polymer and a grafted elastomer composed of a polyorganosiloxane bonded to a fluoroelastomer; and (b) agitating the coating composition including the azeotropic mixture, thereby reducing the viscosity of the coating composition.

There is disclosed a coating composition including water, a solvent, a grafted elastomer composed of a polyorganosiloxane bonded to a fluoroelastomer, and a liquid which forms an azeotropic mixture with the water, wherein the azeotropic mixture of the water and the liquid restrains a viscosity increase in the coating composition over time.

Low fix temperature toners are fabricated by a two step melt mixing and reactive melt mixing process wherein there is initially prepared, for example, using a melt mixing device, a composite of pigment and resin, followed by crosslinking of the resin component at high temperature and high shear to produce a partially crosslinked toner with substantially no unpigmented gel domains. The toners are particularly suitable for high speed fusing, show excellent offset resistance and wide fusing latitude, and superior vinyl offset properties.

Toner reactive melt mixing process

A suspension polymerization process for the preparation of a polymeric material formed from at least two monomers, a non-gaseous monomer and a gaseous monomer. The composition of the beads or particles of the polymeric material is controlled by adding gaseous monomer to the vapor phase after polymerization of about 5% to about 90% by weight of the non-gaseous monomer or by removing a portion or substantially all of the gaseous monomer in the vapor phase before polymerization of about 70% by weight of the gaseous monomer in the aqueous suspension, or a combination thereof.
