A shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator includes a groove formed in a surface of a shape memory alloy (SMA) substrate establishing a trace pattern for a layer of conductive material formed over an electrically insulative layer. The trace pattern includes a first end, a second end, and a heating element disposed between the first and second ends. The SMA substrate is trained to deform at a transition temperature achieved when electricity is conducted through the conductive material via first and second interconnect pads terminating the first and second ends of the trace pattern.

Shape memory alloy actuators

An electrolytic capacitor cell for use in implantable medical devices and associated method for manufacture are provided. The capacitor cell includes an electrode substrate having a dielectric layer formed thereon by atomic layer deposition. In various embodiments, the dielectric layer includes an oxide of one or more valve metals.

This invention relates to an implantable medical device to treat a patient. The implantable device can be an orthopedic device such as a spinal implant including, but not restricted to, a disc or nucleus pulposus prosthesis, a spinal rod assembly, or a bone fixation plate. The orthopedic device can be formed to include a metal matrix composite that provides enhanced wear and diagnostic imaging techniques. In other forms, the present invention provides an implantable medical device that includes a porous metal matrix composite that can deliver a therapeutic composition to a patient. In still other forms, the present invention provides an implantable electrical device or lead formed to include a metal matrix composite that provides lower polarization and interfacial impedance and allows enhanced sensing of the physiological signals.

A conductive material formed upon a portion of the electrically insulative layer in a trace pattern includes a first end, a second end, and a heating element disposed between the first and second ends. The conductor is comprised of a wire wound in a coil configuration with the wire comprised of a super austenitic stainless steel having a composition of at least 22% nickel and 2% molybdenum. Material of such composition has been found to have suitable conductivity for use with implantable pulse generators and suitable fatigue strength when used in endocardial lead placement. Moreover, such material has been found to pass tests intended to detect metal ion oxidation (MIO) in polymeric materials.
