To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent to obtain a liquid crystal alignment film which has favorable seal adhesion and a favorable residual image property, and which is excellent in removability of a decomposed product formed after irradiation with ultraviolet rays. A liquid crystal aligning agent containing at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyimide precursor having structural units represented by the formula (1) and structural units represented by the formula (2) and an imidized polymer of the polyimide precursor: wherein Xand Xare a tetravalent organic group, Yand Yare a bivalent organic group, and Rand Rare a hydrogen atom or a Calkyl group.

To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent to obtain a liquid crystal alignment film which is excellent in the adhesion to a sealing agent and in the liquid crystal alignment property. A liquid crystal aligning agent containing at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyimide precursor having a bond represented by the following formula (1) in its main chain and an imidized polymer of the polyimide precursor: wherein each of R, R, Rand Rwhich are independent of one another, is a hydrogen atom or a Cmonovalent hydrocarbon group which may have a substituent, and D is a protecting group to be replaced with a hydrogen atom by heat.
