A portable electronic device and method for tuning an antenna is provided. The portable electronic device includes an antenna, a tunable element, a first input unit, at least one additional input unit, and a processor. The method involves receiving a first set of data, determining a plurality of possible physical states, activating a second input unit, receiving a second set of data from the second input unit, selecting a physical state of the portable electronic device from the plurality of possible physical states, and tuning the antenna based on the physical state of the portable electronic device.

A higher variation in the frequency offset measurement reflects a poorer channel quality and a higher speed; a lower variation in the frequency offset measurement reflects a better channel quality and a lower speed. The parameter(s) may be fed back to the system and used, for example, to make adaptive modulation and coding decisions.

A processor compares the digital, baseband I and Q signals with a demodulated I and Q signals to compensate for amplitude, frequency and phase modulation errors.

A processor selectively switches the digital baseband I signal and the digital baseband Q signal between the I and Q signal inputs to provide selective phase shifting for the digital baseband I and Q signals.

A communications subsystem for a wireless device for correcting errors in a reference frequency signal. The communications subsystem comprises a frequency generator for generating the reference frequency signal and a closed loop reference frequency correction module that generates a reference frequency adjustment signal for correcting the reference frequency signal when the communications subsystem operates in closed loop mode. The subsystem further includes an open loop frequency correction means that that samples values of the reference frequency adjustment signal during the closed loop mode and generates a frequency correction signal for correcting the reference frequency signal when the communications subsystem operates in a mode other than closed loop mode.

The communications device may include a processor configured, for example, to selectively switch the digital baseband signal and the digital baseband Q signal between the I and Q signal inputs to provide selective phase shifting for the digital baseband I and Q signals. For example, the controller may selectively phase shift the digital baseband I and Q signals, and control the I and Q power amplifier circuits to vary an amplitude of the amplified I and Q signals.

The disclosure is directed to a method, computer program product, or a mobile device configured for obtaining a mobility parameter indicative of a mobility of the mobile device. The mobility parameter may be further utilized to configure the operating state of the mobile device. The mobility parameter is obtained using a multi-sense approach, which utilizes both Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and Frequency Offset (FO) measurements. The mobility parameter is based on statistical parameters relating to the distributions of the RSSI and FO measurements. A system and method for speed measurement of a mobile device, using an speed sensor such as a satellite navigation system or an accelerometer, does not need such speed sensor to be continually activated. The system and method make use of a monitor for monitoring at least one motion indicium for indicating that the speed of the mobile device is above an initial threshold, including but not limited to: monitoring the Doppler shift measurements of a timing signal; monitoring the timing advance of a cellular radio signal; monitoring the number of base stations visible to the mobile device; monitoring the frequency of base station handover, however determined; monitoring the level crossings and/or the autocorrelation of an RSSI signal; and/or triangulation of the position of the mobile device. When the monitor determines that the mobile device may be travelling in excess of a threshold speed, a speed sensor is activated to confirm the indication. If the speed sensor determines that the mobile device is travelling at a speed below a second threshold, the speed sensor is deactivated.
