In general, the disclosure describes techniques for measuring edge-based quality of experience (QoE) metrics. For instance, a network device may construct a topological representation of a network, including indications of nodes and links connecting the nodes within the network. For each of the links, the network device may select a node device of the two node devices connected by the respective link to measure one or more QoE metrics for the respective link, with the non-selected node device not measuring the QoE metrics. In response to selecting the selected node device, the network device may receive a set of one or more QoE metrics for the respective link for data flows flowing from the selected node device to the non-selected node device. The network device may store the QoE metrics and determine counter QoE metrics for data flows flowing from the non-selected node device to the selected node device.

Planning and managing network probes using centralized controller

In general, the disclosure describes techniques for dynamic application service level agreement (SLA) metric generation, distribution, and intent-based Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) link selection. For instance, a network device may determine a metric associated with an application or application-group. The network device may send the metric to a controller, and in response may receive from the controller a recommended SLA metric associated with the application or application-group. The network device may also compute an intent-based SLA metric based on the recommended SLA metric, one or more characteristics of one or more links connected to the network device, and a user configured intent model that defines a tolerance level to apply the recommended SLA metric. The network device may select, based on the intent-based SLA metric, a path to send traffic from the application or application-group.

Dynamic application SLA metric generation, distribution, and intent-based SD-WAN link selection

A controller device manages a plurality of network devices arranged at a plurality of sites. The controller device includes one or more processing units configured to determine a stateful intent for managing a software application at the plurality of network devices and represented by a graph model and translate the stateful intent into low-level configuration data. The one or more processing units are further configured to determine, for each site, a priority index based on a site-level usage of the software application, determine, an ordered list of the plurality of sites based on the priority index for each respective site, and configure, for each respective site, and in an order specified by the ordered list of the plurality of sites, one or more network devices of the plurality of network devices that are arranged at the respective site according to the low-level configuration data.

Prioritizing policy intent enforcement on network devices

Techniques are described for selecting paths in accordance with service level agreements. For example, spoke and hub routers may advertise routes associated with virtual routing and forwarding (VRF) instances mapped to service level agreements (SLAs). A virtual route reflector of an intermediate router may receive route advertisements and may add respective path communities associated with particular links selected based on link state measurements in accordance with the SLAs. The hub or spoke routers may receive the route advertisements including a respective path community and install the selected path as a next-hop for a given SLA. In this way, spoke and hub routers may forward traffic on links that satisfy particular SLAs such that Quality of Experience (QoE) for an application may be restored or improved.
