Some implementations include a system comprising at least one coiled tubing extending from a surface of a wellbore to a bottomhole assembly (BHA); a power cable to be housed either inside or outside the at least one coiled tubing and to electrically couple a power supply at the surface of the wellbore with the BHA. The BHA comprises at least one capacitor to store electrical power received from the power supply via the power cable housed in the at least one coiled tubing; and at least one electrode electrically coupled to the at least one capacitor to receive the stored electrical power from the at least one capacitor and to periodically emit pulsed power discharges into a subsurface formation to drill the wellbore based on the stored electrical power received from the at least one capacitor.

Power delivery system for pulsed power drilling

Some implementations include a system having at least one thermally insulated coiled tubing and a bottom hole assembly (BHA) connected to the at least one thermally insulated coiled tubing. The BHA includes at least one capacitor, the at least one capacitor configured to store electrical power. The BHA also includes at least one electrode electrically coupled to the at least one capacitor, the at least one electrode configured to receive the stored electrical power from the at least one capacitor and to periodically emit pulsed power discharges into a subsurface formation.

Insulated coiled tubing for pulsed power drilling

Disclosed embodiments relate to a pulsed-power drilling system, in which a pulsed-power drill is conveyed downhole and operated via coiled tubing. The coiled tubing may be configured to simultaneously transmit power and drilling fluid downhole. For example, the coiled tubing may include a flexible hollow fluid tube configured to transport drilling fluid therein, and a flexible cable tube disposed within the fluid tube. The cable tube may have one or more cable disposed within protective tubing, protecting the cables from drilling fluid in the fluid tube. Methods of making and using such coiled tubing with pulsed-power drills are also disclosed.

Pulsed-power drilling system with integrated power and communication coiled tubing conveyance

A method for supplying, via an electrical interface, an output electrical power to an electrical load that is downhole in a borehole formed in a subsurface formation, includes generating mechanical energy from a flow of a fluid being delivered into the borehole; converting the mechanical energy into an input electrical power; storing the input electrical power into a primary capacitor, wherein the input electrical power has a variance that is greater than a variance threshold. The method includes performing the following operations while continuing to generate the mechanical energy generated from the flow of the fluid, in response to determining that at least one load criteria is satisfied, discharging the input electrical power from the primary capacitor to the electrical load to power a downhole operation by the electrical load.

Fluid based intermittent powering of downhole operations

Apparatuses, systems and methods for implementing a downhole alternator assembly are disclosed. In some embodiments, a downhole alternator assembly comprises a casing; a turbine disposed within the casing and actuated by a drilling fluid flow; and a rotor disposed within the casing. The rotor includes a cylindrical rotor core rotated by the turbine; a plurality of permanent magnets disposed in the cylindrical rotor core; and a drilling fluid channel extending axially through the center of the cylindrical rotor core. The downhole alternator assembly includes a stator disposed within the casing. The stator includes a cylindrical stator core disposed concentrically between the cylindrical rotor core and the casing; conductor windings within the cylindrical stator core; and a plurality of radially distributed fluid channels extending axially within the cylindrical stator core between a front end of the cylindrical stator core and a back end of the cylindrical stator core.

Downhole electrical generator

A power condition system is disclosed for conditioning power for charging of at least one capacitive element of a pulse power electrode, where the electrical power is received from at least one of a downhole alternator or generator. The received electrical power is rectified and controlled for both voltage and current amplitude. The electrical power is then split into two parallel square wave signals. The electrical power is then transformed, using parallel high frequency high voltage transformers, to a high voltage signal. The high voltage signals are rejoined and rectified to produce a high voltage DC signal. The DC signal is smoothed at a high capacity inductor and output via a switching element to at least one capacitive element of the pulse power electrodes.

Power conditioning system for pulse power drilling

A configuration for cooling capacitors comprises a flow tube within a tool body of a pulse power drilling assembly. The flow tube is configured to provide a flow path for drilling fluid through one or more sub-assemblies of the pulse power drilling assembly. One or more capacitors are positioned between the flow tube and the tool body. Each of the one or more capacitors comprises a cooling tube embedded within the capacitor to provide a thermally conductive path for removal of heat associated with the one or more capacitors. Cooling capacitors comprises providing a flow of cooling fluid to a cooling tube embedded in a capacitor in the pulse power drilling assembly.

Configurations for cooling capacitors

A tool including a dispersive spectrometer deployable within a wellbore is provided. The dispersive spectrometer includes a waveguide layer to detect electromagnetic radiation according to wavelength. The dispersive spectrometer also includes a plurality of detector elements disposed along the waveguide layer to detect electromagnetic radiation associated with a portion of the wavelength of the electromagnetic radiation. A method for using the tool in a subterranean application is also provided.

A downhole drilling system is disclosed. The downhole drilling system may include an axial-field multi-armature alternator system, mechanically driven by a turbine; a pulse-generating circuit electrically coupled to the axial-field multi-armature alternator system, the pulse-generating circuit receiving power from the axial-field multi-armature alternator system to provide an electric pulse; and a drill bit including a first electrode and a second electrode electrically coupled to the pulse-generating circuit to receive the electric pulse from the pulse-generating circuit.

A tool including a probe deployable within a wellbore and an optical analysis device coupled to the probe is provided. The optical analysis device includes a two-dimensional (2D) waveguide layer to transmit and to disperse an electromagnetic radiation according to wavelength and including detector elements disposed along an edge, each detector element providing a signal associated with a pre-determined wavelength portion of the electromagnetic radiation. The optical analysis device also includes a substrate layer electrically coupled to receive the signal from each of the detector elements and form a spectrum of the electromagnetic radiation with the processor. A method for using the tool in a wellbore application, a pipeline application, or a reservoir storage application is also provided.

Conventional optical analysis tools containing an integrated computational element may have an operational profile that is too large for convenient use within confined locales. Optical analysis tools having a miniaturized operational profile can comprise: an electromagnetic radiation source that provides electromagnetic radiation to an optical train; and an optical computing device positioned within the optical train. The optical computing device comprises a planar array detector having at least two optical detection regions. At least one of the at least two optical detection regions has an integrated computational element disposed thereon. The planar array detector and the integrated computational element are in a fixed configuration with respect to one another.
