A vapor-absorption refrigeration (VAR) system. The VAR system includes a VAR section having a condenser, an absorber, an evaporator, a first desorber, a second desorber, a first heat exchanger, a second heat exchanger, at least four throttling valves, and at least two pumps. The VAR section heats a saline water feed stream using heat released from the absorber and the condenser, producing cooling effect. The VAR system includes a direct contact membrane distillation-absorber (DCMD-Abs) section receiving the hot saline water feed stream. The DCMD-Abs section comprises DCMD-Abs modules linked in series. Each DCMD-Abs module includes a saltwater feed compartment and a water compartment, and a membrane. Due to temperature difference between the saline water feed stream and cooling water stream, water vapors are produced by evaporation in the saltwater feed compartment and passes through the membrane to the water compartment to be condensed therein.

A cooling and desalination system, and a method for concurrent cooling and desalination are provided. The cooling and desalination system includes a humidification-dehumidification (HDH) system including a humidifier for humidifying a carrier gas using saline water, and a dehumidifier for dehumidifying the carrier gas to obtain desalinated water. The cooling and desalination system further includes a vapor-absorption refrigeration (VAR) system including an evaporator for evaporating a refrigerant and providing cooling effect, an absorber for absorbing the refrigerant by an absorbent, a desorber for heating the refrigerant and the absorbent to obtain vapors of the refrigerant, and a condenser for condensing the vapors of the refrigerant. Herein, the HDH system and the VAR system are connected at the absorber and the condenser so that the carrier gas, after passing through the humidifier, is configured to absorb heat from the absorber and the condenser, before entering the dehumidifier.

Cooling and desalination system

A method for desalination is provided. An electric potential difference is applied across a saline solution, where a salinity of the saline solution is in a range of 2.5 to 7.8 parts per thousand. The saline solution is separated, using electrodialysis, into a concentrated saline solution and a first diluate. The concentrated saline solution is transferred to a reverse osmosis chamber. The concentrated saline solution is pumped through a partially permeable membrane, thereby removing salt ions from the concentrated saline solution, and creating a second diluate and a brine solution. A pressure of the solution is then increased, using a pressure exchanger, by transferring water pressure from the brine solution to the concentrated saline solution. The first diluate and the second diluate are combined, where a first recovery ratio of the first diluate is greater than a second recovery ratio of the second diluate.

System and method for desalination

An atmospheric water generator system which includes an air dryer system containing a plurality of air dryers configured to pass ambient air over a desiccant for the desiccant to absorb moisture from the air and a humidifier-dehumidifier system which is configured to humidify a gas mixture using the desiccant and dehumidify the humidified gas mixture to produce freshwater. The atmospheric water generator system includes a closed desiccant loop and a closed gas mixture loop configured such that ambient air does not enter the humidifier-dehumidifier system. The humidifier-dehumidifier system is configured such that the gas mixture passes back and forth between the humidifier and dehumidifier between two and six times in a single pass of the closed gas mixture loop. Also disclosed is a method of generating freshwater using the atmospheric water generator system.

Desalination systems, apparatus, and related methods for use with saline fluids are disclosed. A disclosed desalination system includes an HDH system including a humidifier and a dehumidifier that, together, are configured to process a first saline fluid to produce freshwater in the dehumidifier. The desalination system also includes an AD system operatively coupled to the HDH system. The AD system includes a first bed, a second bed, an evaporator, and a condenser that, together, are configured to process a second saline fluid to produce freshwater in the condenser. The condenser is configured to transfer heat exhausted by the first or second bed from a vapor, obtained from the second saline fluid, to air circulating through the humidifier and the dehumidifier to drive the HDH system. The evaporator is configured to provide a cooling effect.
