A hybrid electric vehicle includes: a dual clutch transmission having first and second sub-transmissions having respective first and second clutches and first and second synchronizers, and an electric motor rotationally coupled to the second sub-transmission for common rotation therewith; and a control system including a hybrid controller and a transmission controller with the HCP being a supervisory controller, wherein the control system is configured to execute an engine clutch start procedure using the electric motor, and wherein the procedure eliminates hard vehicle speed limits, provides smooth wheel torque during the procedure, and increases a number of transmission gears available for the procedure.

Hybrid vehicle engine start using clutches of dual clutch transmission

A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) includes an internal combustion engine, an electric traction motor, a motor/generator, and a transmission. A launch control system includes a controller having one or more processors programmed to (A) operate the HEV in a vehicle launch preparation phase while the HEV is at a standstill, including (i) commanding the internal combustion engine to an engine speed launch target, (ii) performing a spark retardation on the internal combustion engine to limit wheel torque and generate an engine airflow torque reserve, and (iii) commanding zero torque to the electric traction motor; and (B) operate the HEV in a vehicle launch phase, including (i) reducing or removing the spark retardation, and (ii) commanding the electric traction motor to operate at a predetermined torque, to thereby utilize the engine airflow torque reserve in combination with the electric traction motor to provide increased vehicle acceleration.

Torque control techniques for a multi-motor electrified powertrain of an electrified vehicle include determining a total torque request to be satisfied by the multi-motor electrified powertrain, wherein a first electric motor is connected to a crankshaft of an engine via a belt as part of a belt-driven starter-generator (BSG), estimating a torque loss associated with the belt based on stored data and an engine speed or a BSG speed, determining an optimized torque split of the total torque request between the first electric motor and a second electric motor based on the estimated belt torque loss and to minimize battery power, determining torque commands for the engine and the first and second electric motors based on the determined optimized torque split, and controlling the multi-motor electrified powertrain based on the determined torque commands for the engine and the first and second electric motors.

An engine torque control method for an electrified vehicle having a series hybrid powertrain with at least two electric traction motors includes, in response to detecting an open-to-closed state transition of a drive shaft disconnect system configured to selectively connect and disconnect a first axle system or a pair of first wheels of the electrified vehicle from a first electric traction motor of the series hybrid powertrain, determining an optimum engine torque for the open-to-closed state transition based on a set of parameters for the open state of the drive shaft disconnect system, determining engine torque constraints for the open state and the closed state of the drive shaft disconnect system, applying the engine torque constraints to the optimum engine torque for the open-to-closed state transition to obtain a final engine torque command, and controlling an engine of the series hybrid powertrain based on the final engine torque command.

An electrified powertrain that generates and transfers drive torque to a driveline of a hybrid electric vehicle is provided. The powertrain includes an engine, an electric motor, a clutch, a torque converter and a controller. The clutch selectively disengages an engine output from a remainder of the electrified powertrain. The torque converter transfers rotating power from at least one of the engine and the electric motor to a transmission. The controller is configured to: receive an impeller speed and a turbine speed of the torque converter; determine a target turbine torque; determine, coefficients as a function of the impeller speed, turbine speed and target turbine torque; update an adaptive lookup table based on the coefficients; and determine an adapted turbine torque based on the updated adaptive lookup table.

A control method for an electrified powertrain of an electrified vehicle having a first electric motor before a transmission and a second electric motor after the transmission includes receiving, by a control system and from a set of sensors, a set of operating parameters of the electrified powertrain, each operating parameter of the set of operating parameters relating to a torque split between the first and second electric motors, determining, by the control system, first and second optimal torque splits between the first and second electric motors for a transmission shift event by solving a torque split optimization problem based on the set of operating parameters, and controlling, by the control system, the first and second electric motors based on the first optimal torque split followed by the second optimal torque split relative to the transmission shift event.

A feedforward control method for an electrified powertrain including a torque transfer device arranged between an electric motor and a transmission includes monitoring a set of operating parameters of the electrified powertrain, determining a desired input speed for the torque transfer device based on the set of operating parameters, determining a desired input torque for the torque transfer device based on a characteristics model or map of the torque transfer device and the desired input speed, performing an observer-based determination of a final feedforward torque for the torque transfer device based on the desired input speed, the desired input torque, a filtered actuator achieved torque for the electric motor, and minimum and maximum torque limits for the transmission, and controlling the electric motor based on the final feedforward torque for the torque transfer device.

A method of controlling an actuator for a drivetrain disconnect assembly includes actuating a solenoid to achieve multiple phases of movement, where the movement may be controlled differently in the different phases. The method includes actuating a solenoid of an actuator to drive a first clutch member along an axis and relative to a second clutch member between a first position, a second position, a third position and a fourth position. Movement of the first clutch member between the second position and the third position is at a faster rate than is the movement of the first clutch member: a) between the first position and the second position; and b) between the third position and the fourth position.

Techniques for synchronizing shaft speeds of a hybrid powertrain of a hybrid vehicle include, during a first phase of a synchronization process, starting an engine using a first electric motor and increasing a speed of an output shaft of the engine to a first speed that is less than a second speed of an intermediate powertrain shaft on an opposing side of a disconnect clutch relative to the engine output shaft, and during a subsequent second phase of the synchronization process, performing a model-based determination of a target speed profile for the engine to follow from the first speed to the second speed and controlling the engine to increase its speed according to the target speed profile, and closing the disconnect clutch when the speeds of the engine output shaft and the intermediate powertrain shaft are synchronized.

Model-based engine speed profiling techniques for improved hybrid powertrain synchronization

Hybrid-electric powertrain control systems and methods include a set of sensors configured to measure a set of operating parameters of a set of components of the hybrid-electric powertrain that are each a constraint on minimum/maximum motor torque limits for the electric motors thereby collectively forming a set of constraints and a controller configured to perform a linear optimization to find the best engine torque values that are attainable subject to a set of constraint inequalities as defined by current vehicle state and as monitored by the set of sensors, and control the hybrid-electric powertrain based on the best engine torque values to avoid excessive torque commands that could damage physical components of the hybrid-electric powertrain and/or could cause undesirable noise/vibration/harshness (NVH) characteristics.
