The filter element includes a filter medium radially surrounding and defining an interior space within the filter element and a support element secured to the filter element. The support element faces away from the filter medium and has a lateral support surface having a cylindrical section and/or a section with a cross section that changes in the direction of the element axis, whose main axis runs axially or parallel to the element axis and with which the support element is supported at least transversely to the element axis against a corresponding support section arranged on a side of the filter housing.

An air filter () includes an openable filter housing () and a filter element (). The filter housing () includes an inlet () and an outlet. A filter element () with a filter medium () is disposed replaceably in the filter housing separating the inlet () from the outlet (). The filter element () features on an exterior side facing away from the element interior space () on an axial front face relative to the element axis () at least one supporting element () having at least one supporting lateral surface () with at least one cylindrical portion and/or at least one portion with a variable cross-section in the direction of a main axis. The supporting element () is supported at least transversely in relation to the element axis () with the at least one supporting lateral surface () against at least one corresponding support portion () on the side of the filter housing ().

A filter element, in particular a flat filter element () for installation in a filter housing of a filter for a fluid, in particular an air filter, in particular for an internal combustion engine, in particular in a motor vehicle, and a filter are described. The filter element () comprises open filter bellows () made of a filter medium (), which has an oncoming flow side () and an outgoing flow side () for the fluid to be filtered. The filter element () has at least two hand grip elements () for gripping the filter element ().

A filter element has a filter bellows and at least one support element arranged on the filter bellows that supports the filter element relative to a filter housing in which the filter element is to be arranged. The at least one support element is arranged on at least one edge of the filter bellows and projects outwardly past the filter bellows. The at least one support element is detachably or non-detachably attached on the filter bellows directly or indirectly. The at least one support element is preferably arranged on a corner of the filter bellows and projects past all sides of the filter bellows adjoining the corner. An air filter with a filter housing is furnished with the filter element.
