A wireless adapter enables a camera or other digital camera without inherent networking capability to post or send images to a remote destination. The wireless adaptor comprises a wireless interface for communicating with a remote destination over a wireless network, a camera interface to interface the wireless adaptor to a camera, and a file transfer agent. The file transfer agent uses the wireless interface to transfer the image data received from the digital camera to a destination device. In at least one embodiment, the file transfer agent emulates one or more printers, with each emulated printer corresponding to a different destination. With that configuration, the wireless adaptor transfers image data received from the digital camera to a selected destination based on which emulated printer is selected by the digital camera. Destination parameters for multiple destinations can be loaded and stored in the wireless adaptor.

Method and apparatus for transferring images from an imaging device to a remote device

A base station measures the uplink load on an uplink channel and controls the transmit timing of one or more mobile terminals on the uplink channel based on the measurements of the uplink load. The transmit timing of the mobile terminals may be controlled by sending timing control signals to the mobile terminals over a downlink control channel. In one embodiment, the transmit timing of the uplink channel is slaved to the transmit timing on a downlink channel. In this case, the uplink timing may be controlled by adjusting the downlink transmit timing.

Method and system for registration of licensed modules in mobile devices. The present invention provides for a registration system to determine active use of licensed modules installed in mobile devices such as wireless cellular terminals and PDA's. The registration system can be made to operate in a manner that is substantially transparent to the user of the mobile device. In example embodiments, a module handler within the processor platform of the mobile device collects module parameters as necessary and causes registration messages to be assembled and sent. In some embodiments, encryption is provided. User interaction with the registration process can also optionally be accommodated. Additionally, the module handler can direct that use of the software module or package is restricted until an acknowledgement is returned from the module activation system, confirming the registration.

Method and system for registration of licensed modules in mobile devices

Playback of a media work is handed over from a source playback device to a target playback device while the source playback device is in a play mode. The target playback device continues playback of the media work at a current location in the media work being played. Handover of audio and video playback allows the user to enjoy continuity in playback of the media work when transitioning between playback devices.

Method of providing multiple data paths using a mobile terminal and related devices

A system and method of operating a mobile phone accessory communicable with a mobile phone. The present invention dynamically loads software into a mobile phone from a mobile phone accessory to enable better management of the accessory's resources and capabilities. After a communication link is established between the mobile phone and mobile phone accessory, both devices exchange information to determine the appropriate software to transfer. A verification process then ensures that the mobile phone and mobile phone accessory are authorized to receive and transfer software, respectively. Subsequently, software is transferred from the mobile phone accessory to be stored in the mobile phone. The mobile phone is capable of executing the downloaded software. Specifically, the mobile phone contains the necessary API(s) and processor hardware needed to run a variety of software.

System and method of software transfer between a mobile phone and a mobile phone accessory

Selected identifiers belonging to the wireless communications device are provided to a network entity based upon the control function being processed, or more generally, upon the class of control function being processed. In one embodiment, a Mobile Switching Center (MSC) receives a plurality of identifiers and a control function request from a wireless communications device. The MSC determines which of the identifiers are needed by the network entity to process the requested control function based on the control function requested. The MSC filters the received identifiers to remove un-needed identifiers based on its analysis and forwards the filtered identifiers to the network entity and/or to another network. In another embodiment, the present invention pushes the determination of which identifier to send downward to the wireless communications device itself. In these embodiments, the wireless communications device is programmed to determine which identifier is needed, and this identifier is transmitted to the MSC with the control function message. This determination by the wireless communications device of which identifier is needed is independent of the network, not simply a response to a command from the network. The present method helps insure that the proper identity is sent by the MSC to other network entities when the wireless communications device includes more than one fixed identifier. The method is particularly adapted for situations where the wireless communications device includes a subscription module having a subscription module identifier and mobile terminal having a mobile terminal identifier.

Controlled transmission of wireless communications device identity

A method and apparatus for performing over-the-air activation for wireless communications service subscriptions within a wireless communications system. The method includes providing a plurality of subscription modules each having a unique identifier that corresponds to a plurality of non-activated service subscriptions. An activation period is established for each of the non-activated service subscriptions within which the corresponding subscriptions must be activated or deleted from the system. A list of unique identifiers and their associated activation periods is stored in the wireless communications system. To activate the subscription, a subscription module is mated with a mobile equipment device. An over-the-air activation request is transmitted to the wireless communications system that includes the unique identifier associated with said selected subscription module. The service subscription associated with the unique identifier is activated when the unique identifier is stored on the list and the activation period is valid.

Automatic expiration of wireless communication service subscriptions

A method of controlling the transmission of identities for wireless communications devices relies on a broadcast message from the network to instruct the wireless communications devices as to when to send their identity information. The network's control over the transmissions is extended to the control function class level. In a simple embodiment, the network includes instructions in a broadcast message telling the receiving wireless communications devices to send their identities for some classes of control functions and not others. Thus, by altering the broadcast message, the network is able to control the identity transmissions of the wireless communications devices. In more sophisticated embodiments, the network can control not only whether identities are transmitted for certain control functions, but which identity is transmitted. Thus, one identity (e.g., subscription module identifier) may be transmitted with one class of control functions (e.g., registration) and another identity (e.g., mobile terminal identifier) to be transmitted with other classes of control functions (e.g., page response), thereby providing great flexibility of control to the network.

A method of activating a mobile station used in a cellular network system provides subsidy protection for a cellular operator. The method comprises the steps of installing a subscriber identity module (SIM) in the mobile station, the SIM having an IMSI file and storing the first indicia uniquely identifying the cellular operator, the mobile station storing second indicia uniquely identifying the cellular operator; comparing the first indicia to the second indicia to determine if the SIM and the mobile station are valid for the cellular operator; and if the SIM and the mobile station are valid, then storing a mobile identity number in the IMSI file of the SIM.

Method to perform subsidy protection for TDMA mobile stations

A method for rapidly processing a directed retry (&ldquo;DR&rdquo;) message on a mobile station while the mobile station is void of an up-to-date neighbor list or in the process of completing neighbor list measurements. In one aspect of the invention, the method comprises the steps of receiving a directed retry message on a mobile station; setting SCANINTERVAL to zero and HL_FREQ to high if an up-to-date neighbor list does not exist on the mobile station; completing at least one neighbor list measurement within a wait time period; and invoking RTC-4. The step of completing the least one neighbor list measurement is accomplished within a wait time of about four seconds. The step of completing the least one neighbor list measurement preferably comprises completing 2 neighbor list measurements. If the wait time exceeds about four seconds the mobile station reverts to camping or idle condition.

Modified directed retry feature

A method of message management is provided for use with a mobile communications device having core and protected memories. The mobile communications device is in communication with a radio telecommunications system comprised of authorized and unauthorized radio telecommunications system operators, each operator have a unique identification code which is associated with messages communicated therefrom. The method of message management includes the step of storing the identification code of the authorized system operator in the core memory, receiving a message with an identification code associated therewith from the radio telecommunications system, and comparing the identification code of the message with the identification code of the authorized system operator. The method further includes the step of storing the message in the protected memory only if the identification code of the message matches the identification code of the authorized system operator. An apparatus is also provided for practicing the above mentioned method.

A method and intelligent roaming mobile station for emulating a pre-intelligent roaming scanning routine used by a pre-intelligent roaming mobile station. The method includes the steps of selecting a search scheme from a plurality of search scheme, and restricting an intelligent roaming scanning routine to scan only the service bands within an 800 MHZ spectrum. In response to the selected search scheme, the intelligent roaming mobile station then prioritizes at least one service band operating in the 800 MHZ spectrum into a band scan order. Thereafter, the intelligent roaming mobile station scans for a channel according to the prioritized band scan order, where the channel connects a service provider to the intelligent roaming mobile station according to the selected search scheme.

An apparatus and method for improving the rescan capability of a telecommunications system searching for an Acceptable Service Provider (ASP) after a failure by a given mobile terminal to link with the ASP. After a mobile terminal's communication link with an ASP has been severed or during startup, i.e., whenever the ASP is temporarily unavailable, a mobile terminal, now camped upon an Unacceptable Service Provider, performs one or more partial rescans to re-establish contact with the ASP before performing a full power-up rescan.

Apparatus and method for mobile terminal rescans during roaming

In a mobile station used in a cellular mobile telecommunication system that communicates on any one of a plurality of base station cellular channels depending on cell location of the mobile station, the system being adapted to selectively determine one of the channels to process a call with the mobile station and handoff a cellular call with the mobile station from a current channel to a new channel, a handoff system for detecting system and capability changes when a handoff has occurred. The handoff system includes a memory storing data representing parameters associated with the current channel. A forward communication channel is associated with the current channel for receiving data from a base station. The data includes a handoff message if a handoff is to occur. The handoff message includes parameters associated with the new channel. A comparator associated with the memory compares select stored parameters associated with the current channel to corresponding select received parameters associated with the new channel to determine if system or capabilities of the new channel differ from system or capabilities of the current channel.
