A dual output laser diode may include first and second end facets and an active section. The first and second end facets have low reflectivity. The active section is positioned between the first end facet and the second end facet. The active section is configured to generate light that propagates toward each of the first and second end facets. The first end facet is configured to transmit a majority of the light that reaches the first end facet through the first end facet. The second end facet is configured to transmit a majority of the light that reaches the second end facet through the second end facet.

An amplifier operable with an electric drive signal can amplify signal light having a signal wavelength. A laser diode has an active section with input and output facets. The facets are in optical communication with the signal light and are configured to pass the signal light through the laser diode. The active section is configured to generate pump light in response to injection of the electrical drive signal into the active section. The pump light has a pump wavelength different from the signal wavelength. A doped fiber doped with an active dopant is in optical communication with the signal light and is in optical communication with at least a portion of the pump light from the laser diode. The pump wavelength of the pump light is configured to interact with the active dopant of the fiber and thereby amplify the signal light.

A method of providing a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) within a laser diode package is proposed that includes first inserting the fiber into the package (typically a stripped end termination of the optical fiber) and aligning the fiber with the laser diode. Once aligned, an external FBG writing system is used to illuminate a selected section of the fiber in place in the package (the package remaining 'open' at this time) in a manner that creates the specific grating line pattern for a particular FBG. When using a UV-based system with a phase mask, a focusing lens is disposed between the phase and the open package to direct the interfering beams into the core region of the stripped fiber. A high-power femtosecond laser source may be used in an alternative arrangement to directly write the structure and form the in-package FBG.

Method of forming a fiber Bragg grating in a pre-assembled laser module

A compact, wavelength-stabilized laser source is provided by utilizing a specialty gain element (i.e., formed to include a curved waveguide topology), where a separate wavelength stabilization component (for example, a fiber Bragg grating (FBG)) is used one of the mirrors for the laser cavity. That is, the FBG takes the place of the physical 'front facet' of the gain element, and functions to define the laser cavity in the first instance, while also utilizing the grating structure to impart the desired wavelength stability to the output from the packaged laser source. As a result, the FBG is disposed within the same package used to house the gain element and provides a wavelength-stabilized laser source in a compact form.

An optical amplifier module is configured as a multi-stage free-space optics arrangement, including at least an input stage and an output stage. The actual amplification is provided by a separate fiber-based component coupled to the module. A propagating optical input signal and pump light are provided to the input stage, with the amplified optical signal exiting the output stage. The necessary operations performed on the signal within each stage are provided by directing free-space beams through discrete optical components. The utilization of discrete optical components and free-space beams significantly reduces the number of fiber splices and other types of coupling connections required in prior art amplifier modules, allowing for an automated process to create a 'pluggable' optical amplifier module of small form factor proportions.

There is disclosed an electronic apparatus comprising a chip within a casing. A thermoelectric cooler has thermal connections to the chip and the casing and is configured to transport heat from the chip to the casing. A temperature measuring device is provided for determining the temperature of the chip. A control system is configured to maintain the chip at a target temperature by controlling current supplied to the thermoelectric cooler in response to the measured temperature. A temperature selection system is configured to select the chip target temperature dynamically on the basis of the casing temperature.
