A refrigeration system having a refrigeration unit () for providing temperature conditioned air to a temperature controlled space, an engine () and an electric generation device () driven by the engine, is provided with a battery system () for supplying electric power. A method of operating the transport refrigeration includes, during a high cooling demand mode, operating the engine () to drive the electric generation device () for supplying electric power and simultaneously employing the battery system () for supplying electric power to jointly power the plurality of power demand loads () of the refrigerant unit.

Transport refrigeration system and method for operating

A power supply system for a transport refrigeration system includes an engine coupled to a compressor of a refrigeration unit for direct drive powering the compressor and a generator arranged to also be direct driven by the engine for generating electric power. The generator and the compressor are mounted to a common drive shaft driven by the engine, and the generator may be integrated with the compressor. The power supply system may further include an alternator arranged to be belt driven by the engine for generating DC electric power. A battery pack may be provided for storing and supplying additional DC power. During peak load demand on the refrigeration unit, the engine may be operated with the generator switched off to directly drive the compressor and direct current may be drawn from the battery pack to drive the condenser/gas cooler and evaporator fans.

Semi-electric mobile refrigerated system

A transport refrigeration system includes a diesel engine equipped with a combustion air pressurization device, such as a turbo-charger or a supercharger. The diesel engine powers at least one component associated with the transport refrigeration system, such as a refrigeration compressor or an air-moving device.

An auxiliary power system and method distributes and controls excess electric power that is available from a trailer box refrigeration system. The trailer box refrigeration system may have either a generator for generating direct current (DC), or an alternator for generating alternating current (ac). The generator/alternator produces power to power refrigeration system loads and excess generated power may be distributed to auxiliary loads not associated with the refrigeration system.

Transport refrigeration unit auxiliary power

The refrigeration unit of an electrically powered trailer refrigeration system includes an economized scroll compressor and an economizer circuit selectively operable to inject refrigeration vapor into an intermediate stage of the scroll compressor. An engine driven generator produces AC current to power the scroll compressor and other electric components of the system. During operation of the refrigeration system at high capacity demand, a controller will operate the refrigeration system in an economized mode if sufficient electric power is available from the generator and in the non-economized mode if insufficient power is available to sustain operation of the refrigeration system in the economized mode.

A sensor that is designed for determining ambient pressure for purposes of derating an internal combustion engine at high altitudes, is used to determine the condition of the air filter by taking pressure measurements in the intake manifold before and after the engine is started, with the difference then being an indication of the condition of the air filter.

A refrigerated transport system has a container, a generator system, and a refrigeration system. The refrigeration system is electrically coupled to the generator to receive electric power and thermally coupled to the container. The refrigeration system includes an electrically powered compressor. A condenser is downstream of the compressor along a refrigerant flowpath. An expansi&#xf3;n device is downstream of the compressor along the refrigerant flowpath. An evaporator is downstream of the expansi&#xf3;n device along the refrigerant flowpath. A controller is coupled to the expansi&#xf3;n device to control operation of the expansi&#xf3;n device. The controller is configured to op&#xe9;rate the expansi&#xf3;n device to control an evaporator superheat. The evaporator superheat is to be relatively high for a set temperature of a first valu&#xe9; associated with non-frozen perishables. The evaporator superheat is to be relatively low for a second valu&#xe9; of the temperature associated with frozen goods and subject to maintenance of a minimum suction superheat.

Refrigerated transport system

In a transport refrigeration system which is susceptible to having its drive motors connected to a power source in reverse phase relationship to thereby operate the drive motors in reverse, provision is made to measure the current flow to the motors during operation in each direction and for comparing those current flows to determine which is greater and therefore representative of operation in the proper direction. A backup method is also provided for sensing the ambient temperature of the air downstream of the condenser coil, both before and during motor operation to determine whether the temperature during motor operation is greater than that prior to operation to thereby indicate a proper connection.
