A method for estimating the earliest signal arrival in a wireless communication system is presented. The system includes a base station that transmits a plurality of pilot signals and a mobile station configured to receive a plurality of signals corresponding to the pilot signals. The mobile station includes a receiver containing a searcher correlation mechanism and at least one finger correlation mechanism. The mobile station receiver detects the arrival times and energy levels of the received signals and constructs a searcher histogram and a finger histogram associated with each pilot signal. Each of the searcher and finger histograms represents an arrival time distribution of samples corresponding to the received signals. The mobile station receiver processes samples contained within each of the searcher histograms and the finger histograms to generate a plurality of estimated early signal arrivals. The earliest signal arrival is determined from the plurality of estimated early signal arrivals.

System and method of estimating earliest arrival of CDMA forward and reverse link signals

A multifrequency phase-coded signal structure is presented for use in a system like a radar or sonar or detecting a remote target. The signal structure comprises at least one pulse signal in the form of a mutually complementary set of M sequences, each sequence being composed of M phase-modulated bits. Each two adjacent sequences are modulated on subcarriers separated by a frequency f such that f &equals;1/t , t being a bit duration, and a the subcarriers are transmitted simultaneously.

An improved method for determining the location of a user terminal with a high degree of accuracy. By repeating N times the basic active positioning measurement sets, a much better accuracy is reached that will be of value to the user. According to the method of the present invention, the user makes a position call. A position call prompts a gateway to establish a traffic channel on which a positioning message will yield the basic set of measurements: round-trip delay and round-trip Doppler in single-satellite positioning, and the addition of delay-difference and Doppler difference to a second satellite in two-satellite positioning. The accumulated measurements are used to determine position and theoretical error. The call is terminated when an accuracy threshold is reached or a time limit has expired. The user terminal receives a position message or a failure message.

Fine positioning of a user terminal in a satellite communication system

A system and method for determining a round trip delay of signals transmitted between first and second objects, such as a satellite and a mobile telephone, that move relative to each other. A first signal is transmitted from the first object to the second object. The first signal is received at the second object after a propagation delay D , the delay D being the time taken by the first signal to traverse from the first object to the second object. A frequency of the first signal is measured at the second object. The second object then transmits to the first object a second signal containing a report of the measured first frequency. The second signal is received at the first object after a propagation delay D , D being the time taken by the second signal to traverse from the second object to the first object. The first object measures a frequency of the second signal. The first object then determines the range between the first and second object from the measured overall delay and the measured frequencies of the first and second signals.

System and method for measuring round trip delay on the paging and access channels

A system and method for unambiguously determining the position of a user terminal (for example, a mobile wireless telephone) in a low-Earth orbit satellite communications system. The system includes a user terminal, at least two satellites with known positions and known velocities, and a gateway (that is, a terrestrial base station) for communicating with the user terminal through the satellites. The method includes the steps of determining a range parameter, a range difference parameter, and either or both of a range-rate parameter and a range-rate difference parameter. A range parameter represents a distance between one of the satellites and the user terminal. A range difference parameter represents the difference between (1) the distance between a first one of the satellites and the user terminal and (2) the distance between a second one of the satellites and the user terminal. A range-rate parameter represents a relative radial velocity between one of the satellites and the user terminal. A range-rate difference parameter represents the difference between (a) a relative radial velocity between a first one of the satellites and the user terminal and (b) a relative radial velocity between a second one of the satellites and the user terminal. The position of the user terminal on the Earth's surface is then determined based on the known positions and known velocities of the satellites, the range parameter, the range difference parameter, and either or both of the range-rate parameter and the range-rate difference parameter.

Unambiguous position determination using two low-earth orbit satellites

An apparatus and method for generating an accumulated phase measurement of a communications signal over a predetermined time interval. A frequency estimate of the signal is generated; the frequency estimate is then converted to a coarse phase measurement. A phase error is generated based on the frequency estimate; the phase error is then converted to a fine phase measurement. The coarse and fine phase measurements are summed to yield an accumulated phase measurement.

Accumulated phase measurement using open-loop phase estimation

The present invention is a system and method for accurately determining the distance (range) between one or more satellites and a user terminal and the rate of change (range rate) of that distance. When accurately determined according to the present invention, these quantities can be used to determine the location of the user terminal with a high degree of accuracy. When one satellite is available, the present invention determines the range and range rate based on the Doppler frequency shift that a signal experiences between the satellite and the user terminal, the round trip delay a signal experiences during transmission from the satellite to the user terminal and back via a satellite to a gateway, the Doppler frequency shift a signal experiences between the satellite and the gateway, and the timestamps of the measurements. When a second satellite is available, the present invention determines the range and range rate between the second satellite and the user terminal based on the round trip delay, the Doppler frequency shift that a signal experiences between the second satellite and the user terminal, and the difference in arrival times at the user terminal of the signals from the satellites.

Passive position determination using two low-earth orbit satellites

This invention discloses a method of indicating information related to the trajectory of a projectile traveling at a supersonic velocity, the trajectory intersecting a predefined target plane at a point of incidence and having an angle of incidence with the target plane, the method including sensing a shock wave generated by the projectile at a plurality of fixed locations in a vicinity of the target plane, not all of which locations lie on a single straight line, and providing a plurality of outputs responsive, respectively, to the shock wave sensed at the plurality of locations determining a time-delay for each of the plurality of locations, relative to a predefined, common, reference time, based on the plurality of outputs and determining at least one of the point of incidence, the angle of incidence and the supersonic velocity by at least estimating a solution to a set of time-delay equations, each equation providing an independent representation of only one of the time-delays as a function of the point of incidence, the angle of incidence and the supersonic velocity. A system for indicating information related to the trajectory of a projectile traveling at a supersonic velocity and intersecting a predefined target plane at a point of incidence, the trajectory having an angle of incidence with the target plane is also disclosed.

An improved platform transmitter terminal (PTT) is disclosed for use in an ARGOS type satellite system. The PTT has reduced size, weight and extended life due to a solar array/rechargeable battery power source operating under the supervision of a unique power supply control and protection means. The invented PTT, when used in an ARGOS type system, opens the possibility of tracking, on a global basis, wild animals weighing as little as a few kilograms.
