A thermal-storage container used in thermal systems to exchange heat by fluid flow though phase-changing material disposed inside the thermal-storage container, including a thermal-storage container housing, a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, and one or more capsules containing the phase-change material, and defining a plurality of passages configured to direct the flow of the fluid at different portions inside the housing, wherein an actual fluid flow length from the fluid inlet to the fluid outlet is longer than a direct length measured between the fluid inlet and the fluid outlet through all sections through which the fluid flows. Fluid flow in thermal storage containers

A thermal energy storage unit is disclosed. The system comprising: a tube having at least one inlet and at least one outlet for a first fluid; a plurality of plate-shaped or box-shaped capsules having a second fluid therein, wherein the plurality of capsules is arranged inside the tube to form a plurality of stacks of capsules; wherein: the first fluid is a heat transfer fluid for exchanging heat with the second fluid; the second fluid is a phase-change medium; wherein a plurality of defined narrow flow paths for the first fluid is provided between the capsules. The defined flow paths increase the efficiency of the system.

The present invention provides a power and regasification system based on liquefied natural gas (LNG), comprising a vaporizer by which liquid motive fluid is vaporized, said liquid motive fluid being LNG or a motive fluid liquefied by means of LNG; a turbine for expanding the vaporized motive fluid and producing power; heat exchanger means to which expanded motive fluid vapor is supplied, said heat exchanger means also being supplied with LNG for receiving heat from said expanded fluid vapor, whereby the temperature of the LNG increases as it flows through the heat exchanger means; a conduit through which said motive fluid is supplied from at least the outlet of said heat exchanger to the inlet of said; and a line for transmitting regasified LNG.

A method for maintaining a downhole pump impeller of a geothermal downhole pump includes locating a line shaft to a selected depth, monitoring the depth of a lowermost distal end of the line shaft using a monitor positioned at a lowermost distal end of the line shaft, determining that the depth of the lowermost distal end of the line shaft has significantly changed, and taking a corrective action to return the depth of the lowermost distal end of the line shaft to the selected depth. The depth of the lowermost distal end is monitored by directing a beam of light emitted from a housing mounted on a outer portion of the downhole pump onto a plurality of reflective elements located on the line shaft distal end, and determining whether a receiver mounted in the outer portion receives light reflected from one of the plurality of reflective elements.

Apparatus and method for preventing damage to a downhole pump impeller

A method for preventing damage to a downhole pump impeller of a downhole pump includes setting a rotatable part of a downhole pump to a selected depth, monitoring the depth of the rotatable part, determining that the depth of the rotatable part has significantly changed, and taking a corrective action to return the depth of the rotatable part to said selected depth in order to prevent damage to an impeller that is liable to be caused by a change in depth of the rotatable part. The downhole pump further has a line shaft, an impeller engaged with the line shaft for pressurizing fluid to be extracted from a well, and monitoring apparatus for monitoring the depth of a distal end of the line shaft in order to prevent damage to the impeller that is liable to be caused by a change in depth of the distal end.

An apparatus for maintaining the operation of a geothermal production pump having one or more impellers and a vertical line shaft for driving the impellers, includes a liquid buffer for isolating a discharge column through which pumped geothermal fluid including non-condensable gases flows from a lubrication column through which flows oil for lubricating one or more bearings of the line shaft, the liquid buffer being interposed between the discharge column and an outlet of the lubrication column to prevent infiltration of the non-condensable gases into the lubrication column. The liquid buffer includes an upper oil receiving section facing the lubrication column outlet and a lower securing element related to the upper oil receiving section. A lowermost bearing is a thrust bearing, and a bowl in which the cup structure and the thrust bearing are housed is in fluid communication with a further bowl in which is housed an uppermost impeller.

A method and an apparatus for producing power from a heat source comprising a nonane heater/vaporizer, an intermediate fluid vapor turbine mounted on a shaft that receives and expands the vaporized nonane, an organic fluid vaporizer that receives the expanded vaporized nonane for supplying heat to liquid organic working fluid present in said organic fluid vaporizer and vaporizes said liquid organic working fluid with heat from the expanded vaporized nonane to form vaporized organic working fluid and a nonane condensate, a seal of said shaft being cooled using the nonane condensate by cooling and condensing hot pressurized vapor near the seal, and liquid containing such condensed hot pressurized vapor being supplied to a condensate drain vessel, the drained condensate being supplied to a line connected to a cycle pump of the nonane intermediate cycle, and an organic vapor turbine that expands the vaporized organic working fluid.

Method of and apparatus for cooling a seal for machinery

A method is provided for cooling a seal located in a wall of a chamber and through which a movable shaft passes, the seal being heated by hot pressurized vapor that leaks through the seal into the chamber and internal friction. The method comprises the steps of: providing a chamber in which the seal is located and into which the hot pressurized vapor leaks; injecting cool liquid into the chamber in which the seal is located; and cooling and condensing the hot pressurized vapor in the chamber thus cooling the seal.

In accordance with the present invention, a method is provided for increasing the output of a geothermal steam turbine power plant comprising the steps of: providing a separate, additional flash separator that produces the steam for operating the non-condensable gas ejector; supplying all the geothermal steam produced by the main high-pressure flash separator to a high-pressure geothermal steam turbine; and whereby high-pressure geothermal fluid is supplied to both said separate, additional flash separator and said main high-pressure flash separator from the same production well in a pumped geothermal system. Furthermore, according to the present invention, apparatus is also provided for increasing the output of a geothermal steam turbine power plant comprising: a separate, additional flash separator that produces steam for operating the non-condensable gas ejector; supply means that ensures that all the geothermal steam produced by the main high-pressure flash separator is supplied to a high-pressure geothermal steam turbine; and a production well in a pumped geothermal system that supplies high-pressure geothermal fluid to both said separate, additional flash separator and said main high-pressure flash separator.

A geothermal power plant operating on geothermal fluid includes a source of low pressure geothermal steam, and a turbo-generator including a low pressure steam turbine to which the geothermal steam is applied, and a generator coupled to the steam turbine. The low pressure geothermal steam is applied to the turbine, wherein expansion takes place driving the generator, and producing expanded steam that is exhausted from the turbine. A condenser for condensing the expanded steam includes a steam heat exchanger for receiving the expanded steam and a fan for cooling the expanded steam such that steam condensate is produced.
