The present invention provides a method for performing optical image detection using a camera module comprising a Digital MicroMirror Device, a first point Photo Detector, a second point Photo Detector, a first lens and a second lens. The method comprises: mapping incident light onto an image plane of the DMD to form a light irradiance map; selecting N pixels on the DMD for time frequency coding; associating each selected pixel with a unique Walsh code time sequence; time frequency coding by the DMD the optical irradiance values of each selected pixel using a plurality of selected bits of its associated Walsh code time sequence; detecting the time frequency coded optical irradiance values of the selected pixels simultaneously at the first point Photo Detector and at the second point Photo Detector; and performing simultaneous signal processing on the time frequency coded optical irradiance values detected by the first point Photo Detector and by the second point Photo Detector to determine the light intensity of each of the selected pixels and produce an image of the incident light.

Method and system for performing high speed optical image detection

The present invention provides a method for performing high dynamic range low inter-pixel spatial and wavelength crosstalk optical image detection in a camera comprising an Optical Array Device (OAD), a point Photo Detector (PD) and a Photo Detector Array (PDA) sensor. The method comprises imaging incident light from an object onto an image plane of the Optical Array Device (OAD) to form an incident image map; selecting by the OAD and the Point Photo Detector and by the OAD and the Photo Detector Array a plurality of pixels on the incident image map for time-frequency coding; time-frequency coding the selected pixels by the OAD; detecting by the point PD the optical irradiance values of the time-frequency coded pixels output from the OAD; and performing signal processing on the detected optical irradiance values to determine the light intensity of each of the selected pixels.

Smart coded access optical sensor

The present invention provides a method for performing high dynamic range optical image detection of a scene comprising: imaging incident light from a scene onto an object plane; determining the locations of those pixels in the object plane of higher brightness; detecting the optical irradiance values of those pixels of higher brightness to produce a first detected image; detecting the optical irradiance values of those pixels of lower brightness to produce a second detected image; and generating a high dynamic range optical irradiance map of the scene by combining the first detected image and the second detected image into a single image.

Smart photonic imaging method and apparatus

A method for performing high dynamic range optical image detection of a scene. The method comprises imaging incident light from a scene onto an object plane of an Optical Array Device, the OAD operating in time modulation mode; determining the locations of those pixels in the object plane of a first light level; detecting the optical irradiance values of those pixels of the first light level to produce a first detected image; detecting the optical irradiance values of those pixels of a second light level to produce a second detected image; and generating a high dynamic range optical irradiance map of the scene by combining the first detected image and the second detected image into a single image.

Coded access optical sensor

Methods and systems for a compressive optical display and imager using optical scanning and selection and three-dimensional beamforming optics. Standard pixel data can generate a compressed image data set having custom pixel sizes, locations, and intensities. A 3-D beamformer optic adjusts its focus to produce the largest focused beam spot on the display screen corresponding to an image zone compressed pixel. Using scan mirror angular controls, display image space is painted using minimal numbers of laser beam spots whose sizes depend on the compressed sensed image. The imager includes movable reflecting optics to reflect an optical image and controllable imaging optics to pass the reflected optical image toward a digital micromirror that reflects +/&#x2212;&#x3b8; optical beams into +/&#x2212; &#x3b8; optical beam paths. A controller controls reflecting optics and agile front end imaging optics to receive an electronic image signal corresponding to detected +/&#x2212;&#x3b8; optical beams.

Compressive optical display and imager

Methods and systems for a differential compressed sensor to form a smart optical imager that uses both active (laser) and passive (ambient light) to sample the direct image information within a three-dimensional spatial frame. The lens-based distance sensor is produces smart sampling of target by adjusting the size of the laser beam spot on the target sampling grid to produce a boundary outline by a light flooding. This target dependent direct sampling of the target results in direct compressed sensing. A passive light acquisition pin-hole sampling optical sensor design is proposed that produces the pixel-basis Laplacian to determine the compressed sensed pixels in the incident image.

Hybrid differential optical sensing imager

Methods, devices and systems of an optical sensor for spatially smart 3-D object measurements using variable focal length lenses to target both specular and diffuse objects by matching transverse dimensions of the sampling optical beam to the transverse size of the flat target for given axial target distance for instantaneous spatial mapping of flat target, zone. The sensor allows volumetric data compressed remote sensing of object transverse dimensions including cross-sectional size, motion transverse displacement, inter-objects transverse gap distance, 3-D animation data acquisition, laser-based 3-D machining, and 3-D inspection and testing. An embodiment provides a 2-D optical display using 2-D laser scanning and 3-D beamforming optics engaged with sensor optics to measure distance of display screen from the laser source and scanning optics by adjusting its focus to produce the smallest focused beam spot on the display screen. With known screen distance, the angular scan range for the scan mirrors can be computed to generate the number of scanned spots in the 2-D display.

Spatially smart optical sensing and scanning

Methods, systems, apparatus and devices for a variable fiber optic delay line that includes an electro-optic modulator for receiving and modulating an input signal, a switchless discrete long time delay module for injecting a long time delay into the modulated signal to produce a long delayed signal, and a switchless analog variable short delay module injecting a variable short time delay into the long delayed signal for a delayed output signal having a delay approximately equal to the long plus the short time delay. The module may also include non-dispersive single mode fibers for transmission between components and a circulator coupled for routing the input signal to the discrete long time delay module and routing the first delayed output signal to the analog variable short delay module. The VFODL can be used for Radio Frequency, digital electrical signals requiring time delay and amplitude processing or optical signal processing.

Hybrid photonic signal processing modules

Methods and systems for a hybrid optical device for high dynamic range high resolution remote sensing of object distance, object motion displacement, object three dimensional structure, object spatial profile, and measurement of liquid levels, and different matter interface positions. The device uses a hybrid digital-analog controlled variable focal length lens system to target both specular and diffuse objects. The spatial processing methods and systems can include time-frequency processing optical distance measurement methods to enable a robust hybrid-technique sensor.

Hybrid optical distance sensor

Silicon Carbide (SiC) probe designs for extreme temperature and pressure sensing uses a single crystal SiC optical chip encased in a sintered SiC material probe. The SiC chip may be protected for high temperature only use or exposed for both temperature and pressure sensing. Hybrid signal processing techniques allow fault-tolerant extreme temperature sensing. Wavelength peak-to-peak (or null-to-null) collective spectrum spread measurement to detect wavelength peak/null shift measurement forms a coarse-fine temperature measurement using broadband spectrum monitoring. The SiC probe frontend acts as a stable emissivity Black-body radiator and monitoring the shift in radiation spectrum enables a pyrometer. This application combines all-SiC pyrometry with thick SiC etalon laser interferometry within a free-spectral range to form a coarse-fine temperature measurement sensor. RF notch filtering techniques improve the sensitivity of the temperature measurement where fine spectral shift or spectrum measurements are needed to deduce temperature.

Extreme temperature robust optical sensor designs and fault-tolerant signal processing

An optical sensing probe includes a tube having a tip portion configured for placement in an environment in which conditions are to be sensed and an etalon having a known characteristic disposed proximate the tip portion. The tube also includes a head portion remote from the tip portion containing a light directing element for directing light beams at the etalon and receiving reflected light beams from the etalon wherein the received reflected light beams are used for determining an environmental condition proximate the tip portion. A method for measuring a thickness of the etalon may include directing a light beams at different frequencies at the etalon and receiving the light beams from the etalon. The method may also include identifying conditions of the respective light beams condition received from the etalon and then calculating a first thickness of the etalon responsive to the respective conditions and the known characteristic.

Optical sensor for extreme environments

Methods and systems for realizing high resolution three-dimensional (3-D) optical imaging using diffraction limited low resolution optical signals. Using axial shift-based signal processing via computer based computation algorithm, three sets of high resolution optical data are determined along the axial (or light beam propagation) direction using low resolution axial data. The three sets of low resolution data are generated by illuminating the 3-D object under observation along its three independent and orthogonal look directions (i.e., x, y, and z) or by physically rotating the object by 90 degrees and also flipping the object by 90 degrees. The three sets of high resolution axial data is combined using a unique mathematical function to interpolate a 3-D image of the test object that is of much higher resolution than the diffraction limited direct measurement 3-D resolution. Confocal microscopy or optical coherence tomography (OCT) are example methods to obtain the axial scan data sets.

Methods and systems for realizing high resolution three-dimensional optical imaging

Fiber-optic beam routing and amplitude control modules based on a unique fault-tolerant scheme using a macro-pixel to control an optical beam are proposed. The unique macro-pixel method involving multiple device pixels per beam inherently provides a robust digital technique for module control while adding to the optical beam alignment tolerance and resistance to catastropic failure for the overall module. The macropixel approach solves the speed versus alignment and failure sensitivity dilemma present in single pixel element based optical micromechanical systems (MEMS). Specifically proposed are fault tolerant fiber-optic attenuators and switches using several microactuated micromirrors per optical beam. Transmissive and reflective module geometries are proposed using small tilt and small distance piston-action micromirrors, leading to fast module reconfiguration speed fiber optic signal controls. The macro-pixel design approach is extended to other pixel technologies such as polarization rotating pixels. The proposed fiber-optic attenuator and switch designs can be extended to realize a complex network of multiple attenuators and switches that can be applied to N-wavelength multiplexed fiber-optic networks.

Fault-tolerant fiber-optical beam control modules

A remote temperature sensing system includes a light source selectively producing light at two different wavelengths and a sensor device having an optical path length that varies as a function of temperature. The sensor receives light emitted by the light source and redirects the light along the optical path length. The system also includes a detector receiving redirected light from the sensor device and generating respective signals indicative of respective intensities of received redirected light corresponding to respective wavelengths of light emitted by the light source. The system also includes a processor processing the signals generated by the detector to calculate a temperature of the device.

High temperature, minimally invasive optical sensing modules

An agile optical sensor based on spectrally agile heterodyne optical interferometric confocal microscopy implemented via an ultra-stable in-line acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF) based interferometer using double anisotropic acousto-optic Bragg diffraction. One embodiment uses a tunable laser as the light source while other embodiments use a broadband source or a fixed wavelength laser as the source. One embodiment uses anisotropic diffractions in an AOTF to generate two near-collinear orthogonal linear polarization and slightly displaced beams that both pass via a test sample to deliver highly sensitive sample birefringence or material optical retardation measurements. A spherical lens is used to form focused spots for high resolution spatial sampling of the test object. The laser and AOTF tuning allows birefringence measurements taken at different wavelengths, one at a time. An alternate embodiment makes use of anisotropic diffractions in an acousto-optic deflector or Bragg cell instead of the wavelength tunable AOTF. The instrument also forms a classic interferometric confocal microscope via the use of single mode fiber optics or spatial filter pin-hole with a point photo-detector for the receive light. An alternate embodiment via a transmissive beam generation design provides collinear co-located beams on the sample plane for super-accurate measurements.
