A deck mechanism for a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus, wherein its fixed base plate and its slide base are slidably coupled to each other without defining a space therebetween. Elements of a tape traveling system are arranged on upper and lower surfaces of the fixed base plate and the upper surface of the slide base. The upper surface of the fixed base plate is mounted with the head drum, a loading motor, a supply slant post assembly, a take-up slant post assembly, a stabilizer, pinch roller arm-driving and pressing mechanisms, a head cleaning mechanism, a capstan shaft of a capstan, all being upwardly protruded from the upper surface of the fixed base plate. The upper surface of the slide base is mounted with a supply reel table, a take-up reel table, a tension adjusting mechanism, and a brake, all being upwardly protruded from the upper surface of the slide base. The lower surface of the fixed base plate is mounted with a power transmission system for the loading motor, a rotor magnet of a capstan motor, an idler mechanism, and a mode sensing mechanism. The deck mechanism of the present invention can be reduced in volume, total height and in number of elements used. As a result, it is possible to provide products with light, thin, simple and compact construction and reduce the manufacture cost.

The head drum protector is preferably integrated and comprises a head drum protecting wall for protecting a rotary head drum, an opening provided at the lower section of the head drum protecting wall to receive a head base of the rotary head drum and to bring the rotary head protector into engagement with the head base. A pair of support blades extend outwardly from opposite sides of the protecting wall to enlarge the head drum protecting area of the head drum protecting wall and to support an opened tape cassette door. A sensor holder is provided at the lower front of the protecting wall to hold a LED sensor used as a tape end sensor. At a lower section between the protecting wall and the support blade, a fixing part is provided in order to mount the head drum protector on the slide base of the deck mechanism.

The take-up reel brake unit includes a clutch gear engaging with the reel gear of the tape take-up reel table, a take-up reel brake having a rotation limit lever limiting the rotation of the brake in cooperation with the guide pin of the stationary base plate, a latch of the brake selectively engaging with the reel gear of the tape take-up reel table to brake the take-up reel table, and a stop pin of the take-up reel brake received by the slit of the slide base to separate the latch of the brake from the reel gear of the tape take-up reel table in a tape loading operation, thereby releasing the tape take-up reel table.

A tape running system for a slide loading type magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus. The system comprises a stationary base plate mounted on a deck mechanism of the apparatus, a slide base mounted on the stationary base plate such that it is reciprocated with respect to the stationary base plate within a predetermined range, a pair of loading gears mounted on the lower surface of the stationary base plate and engaging with each other and connected to a pair of slant post assemblies through individual loading levers, and a rotational force transmitting unit transmitting the rotational force of the loading gears to the slide base for driving the slide base. The rotational force transmitting unit is connected between one of the pair of loading gears and the slide base and linearly reciprocates the slide base using the rotational force of the loading gears. The pair of slant post assemblies as well as the slide base are driven by the rotational force of the loading gears, thereby achieving the recent trend of compactness and light weight design.

A pivotable cassette housing for a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus, comprising a pivotable bracket formed of a single metal plate, to have an integral construction, and a cassette holder mounted in the bracket and adapted to receive a tape cassette therein. The pivotable bracket has a pair of side walls and a pair of connecting portions integrally formed with the side walls and adapted to connect the side walls with each other, one of the connecting members having a cross section with a stepped shape and the other having a cross section with a shape having opposite protruded ends. Each of the side walls has a guide pin extending inwardly from an inner surface of the side wall and the cassette holder has a guide slot for receiving the guide pin, to mount the cassette holder in the bracket. The bracket is formed by blanking a single metal plate into a construction having a pair of side wall portions, a pair of connecting portions for connecting the side walls with each other, bending the side wall portions of the construction into a shape corresponding the side walls of the bracket, and forming a plurality of recesses at the resultant bent edges of the side wall portions, to produce a plurality of reinforcing support lugs at the bent edges.

A head drum cleaning device for a magnetic recording and reproducing apparatus comprising a head cleaning lever pivotally mounted to a fixed base plate of the apparatus by a pin fixed to the fixed base plate, a cleaning roller rotatably mounted to one end of the head cleaning lever by a pin fixed to the head cleaning lever, a drive member constituted by a part of a slide base of the apparatus and adapted to drive the head cleaning lever, and a head cleaning lever rotating unit operatively connected to the drive member and adapted to pivot the head cleaning lever through two steps, namely, in toward the drum and then in the reverse direction. The head drum cleaning device has a simple construction capable of achieving a smooth cleaning operation, in that the head cleaning lever is actuated by the drive member mounted to the slide base to clean the rotating head drum. The head drum cleaning device can be applied to compact camcorders such as 8 mm camcorders using the slide base.
